Saffy Object Retrieval
We have been working on object retrieval a little every day. Saffy was struggling with objects other than our finger, pen, or gift card. One day I brought out some new high value high value treats and that is when a small mental click happened. She then started taking a large straw and mug handle. In this video we are working through her “usual items” and added a new foam tube. We use the command “get” when playing with toys. In the video towards the end she was getting hesitant and I used “get”. Is it okay to start incorporating “get” when she takes the item and/ or holds the item?

@Laura Rauscher We started with putting our finger in her mouth a couple months ago but we did not practice daily. After group training maybe two weeks ago, Amanda showed us how to use a pen. We started incorporating other items over the last week.

@Amanda Taulborg thank you! I will re watch Griz’s video to see the visual nuances of the reach, your description helped a lot. Today she was a total punk working for food so your saying to use higher value treats is a definite for this training. I think this is one of the harder ones so far for her. Your explanation of get vs grab is awesome!
Mission 3, Day 3 with Daisy (“with me”)
So after chatting with Amanda about Daisy‘s loose walking with me. I’m gonna change the phrasing from heel (because it’s not a true heel), to “with me.” I’m not going to use the word heel until we’ve gotten through the spot training and she’s doing a true heel. I think she’ll be fine with the phrasing change since she’s pretty attentive and often figures out what I want even without the verbal cue (by my body language). At the end of the video, I have her jump up on my shoulders and that’s how we take selfies :-)

Harness for Daisy
I need to get Daisy a “Service Dog in Training” harness. Where did you all get them and/or what brands do you prefer? Links to products/websites for bonus points!!! Thanks!

We got mesh vests from Activedogs.com. We wanted mesh vests because of the Florida heat. We are satisfied with the vests and had good purchasing experiences. We got the blue one first. But found we wanted to have a grab handle so we got the pink one. They have a variety of “badges” and can be ordered with velcro backing for easy changing.
Mission 2 Day 6 Saffy - heeling outside vets
James (aka Dad) took Saffy for a booster shot and decided to do some heel training on the sidewalk right outside full of so many smells! We also had a contractor friend over so she got a bunch of off video leave it, sit & stay, and here/come. He patiently helped us work on not getting to meet everyone until released and then being called back.

@Laura Rauscher Oh, Daisy will do good!! I have no doubt about that! It just takes a little time.
Mission 3, Day 1 - heel, straddle, tuck, scootch
We’re still working on spot, but here are a few other things Daisy does on a regular basis. The heel she currently has is pretty good in that she follows me, but I would like to tighten her up so that she’s closer to me. She does it better indoors, obviously, because there are less distractions. And full disclosure it is not as good outside and I need to practice that. I use straddle mostly when we’re out walking in the woods or on a pier and I want to stop and look at something but not pay attention to her. I can feel her in between my legs so I know she’s not going anywhere since she’s in a down. I also have her straddle to put on and take off her leash sometimes. We use tuck went out at dog friendly restaurants so she doesn’t get in the way or disrupt anyone. And the “scooch” is to help her get into position when she’s under my legs.

@Amanda Taulborg for snuggle she comes from the front and sits. For middle, we also have to consider that we use the cross body leash so we may need her to back in or come from the back but have a very clear release word so we don’t get caught by her leash.

@Amanda Taulborg ya! I have been wondering how we would do that! I will remind you next week. Will we need a spot if backing up?
