The Hardest Day โ€“ What I Learned
There are days that test you beyond anything you imaginedโ€”physically, mentally, emotionally. For me, one of the hardest moments was day 80 of the Conquer 100. Everything in me wanted to quit. My body was failing; my mind was screaming to stop, and I questioned whether I could keep going. But at that moment, I had a choiceโ€”give in or take one more step. I knew I just had to try, that I could be perfect for one second at a time (one step). So, I focused on the next second. Not the full distance, not the overwhelming challenge aheadโ€”just one second. Then another. And another. One second at a time, I got through it. It seems ridiculous, but no one can convince me otherwise. Even in your darkest moments, you can be perfect for one second. What about you? Have you ever had a moment where you wanted to quit? What did you do? Drop your story in the comments.

There was this time we were doing a 50 mile backpacking trip in the desolation wilderness behind the Yosemite valley in California. We drove up from Sacramento, then began our 10 mile ascent into the mountains. Before long I was losing my ability to think clearly and speak. A lot of doubts crept in as I thought I wasn't strong enough or prepared enough for the climb. One of the guys in our group had me and another team member stay behind to hydrate and stay at lower elevation. He went to the camp, dropped off his gear, then came back to not only carry our gear but help us to reach the campground. One of the other guys we were with said, "just give me 5 more minutes!" Every time I would ask him how much further we had to go, he would again say, "just 5 more minutes" We ended up enjoying ourselves immensely that we completed the full 50 miles that week and still to this day say that giving 5 more minutes consistently gave us the motivation to take that next step.
