Overwhelm and Depression
I'm in a rut right now. I've gotten to this place where nothing in my life right now feels right even though everything in my life right now is exactly what I was asking for a year ago. I've tried all kinds of coping mechanisms and the protocol and I've tried everything that's standard and even several non-standard coping mechanisms. I've tried talking about it with people I trust and I've just hit a wall where nothing is helping. If anyone has coping mechanisms they'd like to share, I'd really appreciate hearing new ideas

@Sammy Boyster That's a tough thing to be going through. I'm so sorry. I have have depression off and on in different seasons of life. I like to attack depression from different fronts, because it can be attacked from a behavioral standpoint, mindset, spiritual, environmental, wellness, etc. Here's a list of things that have definitely helped me (I don't know what your belief system is, but I will also include the things that helped me that are also related to my Christian life) also note that my wife & I worked at a Christian boarding school for troubled teen girls for about a decade & i've been in ministry for another decade, so that' where Im drawing from , as well as my own battles with seasons of depression. Some of this list may not necessarily help depression specifically, but it will definitely help your overall well being. In no particular order, here they are: - lots of sunlight, no sunscreen, just sunlight - barefoot touching the ground - minimum of 15 minutes a day (yes there's actual science behind this one) - a morning routine that helps me get focused on the things that matter most - cut out as much sugar and junk food as possible - Cut caffeine intake to a minimum & only after being awake for 1 hour & none after 1 or 2 pm - Vitamins & supplements: L-Tyrosine , a daily vitamin, creatine, B 12 sublingual, fish oil, vitamin D if you aren't getting enough sun - daily exercise for at least 20 minutes (ride a stationary bike or take a jog if you cant get tot the gym ) exercise is one of the most powerful tools for getting out of a rut - read God's Word daily - even if you're not a Christian - it will change you. - being thankful - pray & thank God for the good things in life - even if you cant think of many. Take time daily to say "thank you God for life, sunshine, family, health, my cat , etc etc, I mean literally everythgin you ca think of if you dont know where to strart with this one. - Daily praise - put on some "worship music " & focus on the goodness of God - this one is powerful - And one of perhaps the most powerful tools I use: get a project - one that serves others & that excites you ! Dive in during your spare time. If you dont have spare time for this , create the time. This gets the focus off of yourself & gets you into creative mode & doing something FOR others, it also causes you to dream again. - next up is VOLUNTEER somewhere. in your church, in any organization you can serve other people, a soup kitchen, etc, etc. this one is powerful as well! - Commit to a long term commitment of serving somewhere in some way - such as 3 months, 6 months , one year of volunteering in a local church, or animal shelter, etc. The long term commitment really helps - Start your day with positivity - affirmations, Scripture reading, etc. Speak good over your life & not evil. for example look in the mirror every day, morning time. say things like "i am loved" "I am worthy" I am talented" I am smart" I am beautiful " etc etc. DAILY is key . if you were in a DV situation, you have software in your brain that needs to be rewritten . it takes time to reprogram our brains to believe the good & not evil. - don't engage in negative self-talk - stop yourself everytime you start to call yourself "stupid", or whatever. stop yourself & replace the thought or statement with something that is positive, for example "I've got this" I can do this" I have what it takes, etc, etc, - Join a small group of some sort. NOT nothing like "the depressed peoples club" but find a group that you can join that is positive and is bult either around faith, faith & freedom in Christ, or something that is serving others , a bible study group for women, etc, etc. - Prayer from others - ask for prayer at your local church or a women's group. Inviting God into your situation is so vital. - closely related to the last one is this : talk with good friends, find positive friends, or SOMEONE you can talk to in person or over the phone - personal connection is so important. - so, yeah those are some big ones there. no joke - these will change your life, especially those of a more Spiritual /religious nature. - On a FINAL NOTE: whenever i feel myself start ot drift into that depressed state, I catch myself & DO NOT allow myself to fall into the despair. I fight it like my life depends on it & it does. I statr some of these protocols immediately !! - I hope this helps you & you find your way out & live a happy joyful life.
