Drop the barbell.
I know that's not what you want to hear. But time and time again I see men over 40 walking into the gym, loading up the barbell, and wondering why their shoulders are shot and their chest isn't growing. Here's the truth, most men doing barbell press aren't even hitting their chest properly. They're squirming around, engaging their back, using momentum. Who cares how much you bench? If the muscle isn't contracting, the weight means nothing. Switch to dumbbells. Lower the ego, raise the control. Incline the bench to about 25-30 degrees, not too high or you're just pressing with your delts. Start light and walk the rack. Focus on the stretch at the bottom, the contraction at the top, and control the weight on the way down just as much as the way up. That's where the growth is. Not in the number on the weight. In the connection between your mind and the muscle you're actually trying to build. I've been training for over 40 years. My chest is in better shape now than it was at 40. Not because I go heavy, because I go intentional. Are you still doing barbell press, or have you made the switch to dumbbells, and what difference did you notice when you did? Drop it below. 👇

Was doing heavier hammer strength machine presses last summer. The path of the machine was not good for my body. Switched to dumbbells last fall after seeing Keith’s video about this and it’s been so much more effective.

@Keith Hanenian Esq Yep! I think it helped lead to the shoulder impingement I had. Getting away from that machine was helped me in many ways
Tough one this morning
Tough one this morning. Began week 3 of 5 day pw premium month two and my right arm (dominant and stronger one) felt weak. No pain. Had to drop the weights on some exercises. Honestly felt like giving up a couple of times but gritted it out. Really hoping it was an off day and I’ll rebound next workout. Didn’t sleep well. Stayed at my folks’ house a mile from my own. My dad is nearly 90 and has dementia and we woke me up at 3:30 am to talk. Couldn’t refuse him. No way. But hoping poor sleep is today’s culprit.

Injuries or limitations
I want to talk to you guys about something I see time and time again in this community. Men come in with battle scars. Shoulder surgeries. Bad knees. Lower back that's been through it. Decades of life and hard work written all over their bodies. And then they walk into the gym and try to train like they're 25 again. I get it. The competitive instinct doesn't die. You remember what you were capable of. You want to prove to yourself more than anyone, that you still have it. But here's the reality. The men in this community who are making the best progress are not the ones training hardest. They're the ones training smartest. Lower weight. Full control. Slowing the rep down and actually feeling the muscle working rather than just moving the weight from point A to point B. That's where the growth is. That's where the longevity is. I've had shoulder surgery. I've had elbow issues. I know exactly what it costs to ignore the signals your body sends you. I made that mistake so you don't have to. You're not less of a man because you dropped the weight. You're a more disciplined one. And discipline is what Built Different is built on. What injury or limitation have you had to train around, and how did it change your approach? Drop it in the comments. 👇

I have a full knee replacement, lumbar fusion and cervical fusion. And at 60, a lot of basic aches and pains 😂.
