What makes a great workbench?
It’s time! My hobby has taken over my dining room! I am expanding larger than my room can tolerate. I am abandoning my dining room table and moving into the basement. That said, I get to build a new workbench and instead of just throwing some scraps of wood together I thought I would plan a thought out table. So…. What makes a great workbench? I’m thinking I need to have an are for cutting, an are for dyeing and glueing, a possible are for stitching, and the main area with my stone for tooling. Or is the tooling are not my main area? I am going to use a 4x8 sheet of material for the top of the table plus some shelves as well as storage built into the base of the table. Are there things you wish you did to your space? Things you wish you had not done? Getting input before I build sounded like a great idea.

@GW Brown Absolutely. I found if my table isn't that solid, I put down a 1/8" steel plate I got on Amazon, and then my cutting mat. Works great. The plate was like $30, I bought 2 for my hydraulic Harbor Freight wheel bearing press.
Learning Lethercraft
Beside this course, how are you all going about learning this craft? Lets use this thread as a way for all of us to share our resources.

I started with dieselpunk.ro and buying his patterns. You can't miss with his projects. I eventually bought an xtool s1 40w laser, and now create my own patterns in Affinity Designer (along with stitching holes). The laser is great for prototyping onto card stock. I probably think about leathercraft more than I should. It is fun and rewarding, but I haven't sold many items from my Etsy shop yet. I make customized Shofar straps, and have sold a few there and at church. My biggest problem is getting customers, even when I had my own website. So my two cents, still learning all the time.

Wow, great advice. I sell shofar straps for $100 at our church, and it's personalized with names and Bible verses. The worst part is people changing what they want by texting me multiple times. If I sell via Etsy, they have no choice after ordering, although I am still flexible if they text me in the Etsy system. We have an Equestrian center in San Tan Valley where I think would be a great place to sell cowboy hats, gloves, reins, belts, and more. I've never made a saddle so for now that's out of the question. I will have to attend some events and find out the pricing for vendors. Glad to know you have integrity and pay dpr for every 10 patterns. All of us crafters have made him well off. I'm in the Philippines now so when I get back in two weeks will explore many options. Been making all my friends.and relatives wallets for free (I brought 3 oz vegtan and tools). Keeps me busy.

I need to go to one of these festivals again. I have a friend from Intel (where I used to work); he grows his beard and hair, and dresses up every year, I know he really enjoys the time there.
Retired AF
Retired military living in Arizona. I do leathercraft quite a bit, only making 1 or 2 sales on Etsy a month, if I'm lucky. Hoping to start making and selling patterns, but I'm not quite there yet. Hoping I can learn a lot here, and make higher quality goods. Thanks for the free "skooling."
