Hi Everyone, My name is Ash and I am on here for my 8 year old son Cameron. He is following his dads footsteps and taken on the responsibility of the gloves. Proud dad here!! He trains with J4K and is with Charing FC. Like most keepers he is a confidence keeper and a perfectionist. I have told him we all make mistakes but wondered what other parents / coaches do / say to help him with this.

I will ask my son after a game or a training session how he felt about. If he mentions something he was disappointed about I ask him what he would have done differently. I try not to lead with my own thoughts. He has to work some of it out himself.
Academy nightmare
Hello everyone, I thought I would share an experience I recently had with my son. Chelsea Academy sent an email to his school about an open trial locally. It was a chance to play within their player development programme. My son was very excited so I agreed to take him along. What I witnessed at this trial was some very substandard coaching…..and that’s putting it mildly. I was so disappointed with the level of coaching and lack of energy put in to it. My son goes to a private GK coach and our Saturday team has a dedicated GK coach that works solely with him. Both are miles better, he learns so much and has improved rapidly as a result. I feel sorry for people who don’t know the difference and will pay the monthly fee (£43 a month, £90 signing on fee) at these academies because of the name attached. I know there are some really good ones out there and don’t want to paint every academy with the same brush but I was shocked how terrible the standard of coaching was. My son was successful in the trial and offered a place but I’ve turned it down. It was hard to explain to my son and the pyramid scheme that Chelsea run but I honestly know I made the right decision.

@Joseph Weidner All opinions are welcome. Thank you for your reply but it is very different in the UK. You shouldn’t accept bad coaching because it is attached to the name of a club. In my own experience from the time I played (not going in to that now) I have enough knowledge of what I consider progressive coaching. As you know, goalkeeping is a very specific skill taught in a very specific way. If you are given bad advice it encourages bad habits. I don’t think the academy I took my son to will provide any pathway to the elite academy. I know from talking to other people that their experience is very much the same. A financial commitment doesn’t equate success in this circumstance. It only feeds the machine of coaching mediocrity

@John Beardmore thanks for your reply. Chelsea have a tiered system which is common place within youth academy football. Elite, player development and then community. I would have happily paid if the coaching was a good standard and I felt my son was getting something out of it.

Here is a snippet of Flying Fraser at the weekend. An assist but a tough loss and lessons learned but that’s what it is all about. Rough with the smooth

Does anyone use a camera either in the goal or on their goalie? Is it beneficial? What are the best types? Do they get in the way?

I use a GoPro to film my son’s training sessions with his GK coach. I share them with him and they will make micro adjustments in his technique. I also put it in the goal for the game at the end of training. I share a snippet of it with the parents
