The Kicking Friends You'll Make...
I started this group to help kickers and punters to develop their skills to their greatest potential. But also to provide a community of like-minded people, both young and old, who have a connection to this unique position in sports. Because so many kickers (and I use that term to also include punters, btw) spend their time alone on a deserted field practicing their technique, they often don't get the camaraderie that is instantaneous for the rest of the team. So making friends can be hard. I think it's why you looked with anticipation to find the opponents kicker in the line-up to shake hands after the game... to make a connection to someone who "gets you". Yet, typical for most kickers, they make no other connection to those same people outside of the game. That's one big benefit of being here! Inside KICKING SKOOL! So, please, don't be afraid to: • post a thought • ask a question • upload a kicking video • teach a technique • make a genuine comment on someone else's post • add a funny GIF to a post that expresses your approval • even, DM me, or someone else! _ _ _ I'm an "old-timer"... but I make 100+ new friends every summer at my camps. I make a point of learning everyone's name while they're at camp. I always ask, "What's your name, what school do you go to? What year will you be this Fall?" You can do the same right here. Be brave enough to introduce yourself. If you haven't already, do so again — any time! (And if you have a picture of yourself, or of you kicking or punting, we'd all love to see it!) 😆 Hey!

@Seth Adams We haven't talked yet...but Coach Farley speaks highly of you. Good luck with the SUI job. I was a holder, kicker, punter, receiver, and punt returner for UW-Stout. If I can be an "ear" for you, please contact me. Coach Jim

@Mike Farley I edited Copper to Cooper! :)
How far is far enough?
Young kickers want to know "how far" they need to kick or punt to become an effective player for their team. In general, these two charts pretty much sum up what targets you should shoot for ...and look to surpass). Where are you? Not sure how to reach your next goal? Ask.

@Ellis Wangelin In high school or college - I never touched a game ball before I could kick it, unless it was a kickoff. But an overinflated ball can be like kicking a brick! Course, the ambient temperature has a lot to do with how it feels. Same "feeling" if you have been on the cold sidelines for a couple of hours and then need to enter the game and perform at 100% efficiency. On the flip flop side of that, an under-inflated ball is like kicking a wet sponge. You can have good contact, and it still will not jump off your foot the way you want. (I think 13PSI is what it says on the ball.) Answering your second part of the question, I was never able to adjust a ball to my parameters. Keep in mind, this fall will be 40 years since I last played for Stout!!! Things may have changed.

Had a good discussion with Coach Farley yesterday. As kickers and punters, we need to know our limitations but make our strengths even stronger. Real life example here: As a college kicker, in the mud, rain and wind, I still felt confident for a field goal up to 55 yards. Albeit I never attempted one that long. During a certain Saturday night game vs. UW-Oshkosh (this is 1986), my coach (Rich Lawrence) asked me, "Can you hit this one from 48?" and I responded, "Absolutely!" I went out, and struck the perfect ball, right down the middle, and it would have been good from 60. Sometimes that confidence will carry you. That kick ended up being the longest in the conference (WSUC now WIAC) that season, and it was only 48 yards! If it would have been from 60, I don't know if I would have had the "swagger" to make the kick. The important part of all of this, we won the game - 17-10. At the moment, that field goal put us up 10-7 right before halftime. Changed the momentum of the game. So, crew, bottom line, "KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS!"
Strength Training for Kickers/Punters!
Hello all! My name is Nathan Custer. I am an alumni of UW-Whitewater where I was a Punter and kicker. I am now a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with a passion to help kickers and punters get the performance training in the weight room they need, that is often neglected for high school athletes. I believe that getting in the weight room and attacking a plan with high intent can make a large difference for any athlete looking to be the best they can be. I have experience training the specialists for the Wisconsin Badgers football team as well as being a kicker/punter myself. I fell through the cracks in high school, avoiding the weight room for the most part, relying on my raw abilities. Little did I know, I was setting myself back years of potential because I couldn't find my way to the weight room. Now my passion is help others avoid this mistake. If you're looking to add this aspect into your training routine, I would be more than happy to help you develop a plan for strength and power GAINZ to attack this summer off-season with. I offer personalized online programs as well as in person, one-on-one training for anyone in or willing to travel to the Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls, WI area. Email me at [email protected] or shoot me a text at 715-218-8557 with your name, age, and school if interested!

Winter - Poor Weather
Those of you that live in winter climates with snow, ice, and cold...where are you finding a place to kick some footballs? Coach Jim

As a youngster, there was two tall trees in my backyard, about 8 feet apart. I would hang a tarp between them. You could get some work done...without chasing a ball all over the place. Coach Jim
Hey, membership reaches 100!
IT takes time to grow a good community here, but I'm happy to report that we've finally got 100 members in KICKING SKOOL in 18 months... Like making your first 30 yard FG! Aiming now on getting to 200 members and halve the time to do so! Set goals, go out and achieve them! 😅
