In Session - Live Writing
@Timothy Colomba thank you for creating space where we can write. I got 525 words written that would not have been written tonight if I wasn't trying to make it to this live. This is my personal challenge to the other writers out there to join when you can - I was late but decided 30ish minutes was better than no minutes!

@Kimberly Stebbins hopefully I'll see you there 😊 my schedule is a bit erratic with a five month old baby who only does bedtime with his momma and it never seems to be the same time each night. So I plan to jump in when I can!
Fix it in Post
In my freelance business (video/photo), we often say "we can fix that in post" when there's something that's better left finished than reshot. I find I have that approach in writing. Get it all out and then fix it in post. How about you? What's your approach? When writing your first draft, do you edit-as-you-go or get everything out in one shot?

@Kimberly Stebbins the first third of the book is where a lot of people get stuck. It sounds like you have an information flow problem which is something I struggled with a lot too and was fortunate to get help on during a writing mentorship last year. The Best suggestion I can make is that when you make something that changes what needs to be said in the first third, go back right away and churn through to fix things, and then get back to progressing the story. And then when you're done this project do some practice with smaller projects or simpler genres on introducing the information the reader needs when they need it. Fantasy can be the hardest genre to get information flow right because it's almost entirely made up. So when I did my mentorship she had me start on other genres and write using places I know well as the setting, and then she gradually got me into the high fantasy genre I love writing by doing historical fiction, then modern fantasy, then new worlds fantasy

@Kimberly Stebbins definitely keep on with this project 😊 I wrote and published 4 Christian high fantasy novels before doing my mentorship! Each work I finish I love more than the last because I improve with each one and have more fun every time 😁
A Little Collaborative Fun
@Timothy Colomba I hope this is alright... I thought it would be fun to engage in one of those "write the next line" threads. I'll go first: The old man's bushy white eyebrows rose above his blue eyes like two clouds floating by on a summer afternoon. He leaned forward until I could see the pores on his bulbous nose and wrinkled cheeks. "Sonny," he said to me in his southern drawl, "they sell everything from pens to popcorn machines, but if you can't handle a little supernatural shock and awe every now and then I'd stay far far away from that store." ...

OneDrive makes it easier for me to write on my phone when I'm on the go. Lol a smart phone also makes that possible. Also sound cancelling earbuds and a timer help me get into deep focus mode. I also find it helpful to close my office door and make the only light be that from my computer monitor. Oh and my ergonomic style keyboard helps take some strain off my wrists. I would like to get in the habit of using a notebook or OneNote to keep better notes of character and world details as I write, it comes in handy to have a quick reference when writing longer stories or series. It is something I need to train myself to do though.
What comes easiest to you in writing?
For me, it's the ideas. I've got tons of ideas and writing that first draft usually is the easiest part. I know that's not the case for everyone though. How about you? Where's your major strength with writing?

Generally I'm really good at holding the world and magic systems used in my stories in my head so the first draft is quite cohesive, however that is a challenge now that I'm a stay at home mom with constant interruptions and not a lot of alone time. I've adapted by writing smaller, simpler projects. So I'm working on a series of children's stories and a modern Western romance novella, it's easier to hold the narrative of a story without a bunch of made up places and rules to keep track of.

@Timothy Colomba yes it is a matter of compassion for myself to say, I don't have capacity to write the complicated stuff right now but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy some kind of writing. I think the habit of writing every day no matter what kind of writing is will benefit me when I'm back to the bigger projects
