@Kay Mam yes that is how separation would look. It is separated from the stress point to the free edge. You wouldn't necessarily have to shorten it but , you would have to remove the separated part. The best way to remove separation is to use a carbide or ceramic bit right over the area where the separation ends and the connected area begins.
@Kay Mam If the natural nail plate has lifted from the nail bed, reduction of length is necessary. Excess length increases additional stress on the compromised nail plate to bed adhesion and can make the damage worse or delay proper reattachment
