Fireside Chat Reflection 3/24/26
I appreciated seeing those of you who came to our chat. This time it was about "Knowing when something is enough..." We talked about 5 different parts of our lives, and how "enough" might show up (or not.). Personal Growth / Self Improvement; which shows up as constantly working on yourself but rarely pause to feel ok about who you are right now. Relationships; which shows up as doing your part in a situation but still trying to manage the outcome, or giving more energy then you have because you don't want to let someone down. Work / Productivity; Looks like you finishing what needs to be done but then looking for more to tackle. Home / To Do Lists; House is clean enough but you find one more thing to organize, or you Spend the weekend catching up on tasks instead of enjoying the space you have. Money / Resources; You've saved a decent amount but you still can't relax about money, or you reach a goal but then you move the goalpost. I personally can see myself in ALL of these, which is why this topic turned a bit more into Jess guidance then chat - but this is why I appreciate you all. The different perspectives that you all bring up allows me to both give myself grace but also to learn (and keep learning) that I need to pause and enjoy more. If you weren't able to join us this week, I asked the group for feedback on our Fireside chats, or anything they'd like to share as to how this group is structured, or what they'd like to see. The answer: A resounding desire for an "open discussion chat." I hear you! Let's have our First Ever WILDFIRE CHAT on April 7th. I will need a second cup of coffee for this one! Thanks all - see you next week! Jess

Where I was: our newest grandbaby was born & we were taking care of the other children :-) I am sorry I missed it - it sounds full of good things.
Friday Night Campfire Question
What is something simple that made you smile this week? Sometimes the small moments are the ones that stay, heal, nurture, and ground us.

Our kids' families all made pies, for PI Day (March 3.14) and sent photos of them to our family message board, and we sent them a photo of ours. So cheerful...

@Jessica Borum We made an egg and basil quiche, and one family made two cottage pies, and a lemon meringue pie and the other an apple pie and a beef pot pie. I only hope some of the other things we taught them when they were growing up have stayed with them, this long...
Friday Night Campfire Question
Tonight’s Campfire Question ☕🔥 What is something you’ve learned in life that you wish you had understood sooner? Sometimes those lessons arrive quietly… and only make sense years later. I’d love to hear yours.

I wish I had known sooner that numerous situations that I was in knots over, throughout the years, might turn out well, and did. How come that hardly ever occurred to me at the time that things might actually work out and be all right??
Do you over-commit?
Good Morning and Happy Wednesday everyone. Do any of you feel like you've ever committed to something that's turning out to be too time consuming but now that you're in it....you have to finish it, because "that's who you are," or "what would it say about ME if I didn't see this through to completion?" If so, what's your process? When this happens with me I don't typically feel resentment, but I do massively deplete and find myself exhausted. How do you handle things like this - or are you able to recognize it beforehand?

On the one hand, I do not think you can easily deal with overcommitment when it comes to your children and other family members. So other things get put aside, facing the tyranny of the urgent. Now, I am listening to my body more, and using it to help me see when things are too much, after decades backing out of things at the last minute, rather than saying no at the very start. A real blessing of this time of life is finishing things I started over 40 years ago. I finished 4 quilts, and reworked 2 more that the girls took to school and put in school laundry machines. I've cleaned out family things that landed here, got my grandmother's autobiography up on Amazon, and am now on to sorting family photos. It's the things that got put aside, and I am grateful for the time opening up for me to catch up with myself. I wish I had known this would be here for me,, all the years I rued the things that weren't done...

@Debbie Unruh It's called Curtain Going Up, by Blanche Stoddard Seely - she was a famous stage actress in the early 1900's and she wrote about growing up and her theatrical life. Her other papers are all in the Beinecke at Yale, but this is free, on Kindle.
How old would you be, if you didn’t know how old you were?
I’m 24. At 24 I was living in California working for Patagonia. I was falling asleep on the beach on Sundays after Mimosa brunches with friends. I was skiing Mammoth mountain, rock climbing with my roommates, and dancing until the bars closed. I still love the memories of few responsibilities and doing things I loved whenever I wanted to do them. I then got into marriage and life and kids and growing up. Now- I still think of that unbridled freedom. Not sad for the 30 years since, but recognizing that girl is still in here. She just likes to be in bed by 9 now. How about you?

It's amazing - mine is 24 also - after my first year of teaching, with my summer free, I went to Holland, seeing Corrie Ten Boom's house in Haarlem, Heerde and some of Amsterdam. I bicycled through a forest, seeing sea shells on the ground under the trees, because it was land reclaimed from the sea. Then travelling around England staying at B + B's run by elderly ladies who fed me enormous breakfasts, and a hotel with an incredible rose garden. I had no plan at all and ended up visiting cathedrals, seeing Julian of Norwich's church, and Oxford and Cambridge, visiting C.S. Lewis' and JRR Tolkien's and the Inkling's haunts. I loved the freedom to just wander around and took myself to see My Fair Lady in London and to see the Queen's dollhouse and the Isle of Wight.
