Estimates: Job description with total price (labour+material) vs Itemized with individual prices broken out.
Had a couple customers say no thank you based on price this week and ChatGPT seems to think I’m loosing them in the estimates. Generally I do my estimates with a detailed description of work to be completed, materials with a list and labour cost for the job. But when it’s a bunch of smaller jobs added up the total seems over whelming (I think) ChatGPT suggests breaking out the price of each part to give customer a bit more flexibility especially on jobs which have a bunch of things. What’s the thoughts from this group? I have attached the two estimates in question for context. 1 was demoing and redoing some new front steps and replacing a piece of bead board that was attached to the outside for some reason. 2 was a bunch of different hand rails and grab bars, some on the front steps into concrete. Some on a bathroom for a customers elderly mother. Stuff which is simple but relatively high risk/high risk of call backs. But I strongly think both didn’t pan out because the overall price seemed high

Here’s what I see for what it’s worth 1. Both of your estimates are too explanatory most people don’t care of what you’re going to do to a certain degree. They care about their problem going away. In most cases for us, I will put supply and install the following to home and I will list of what we’re going to do. Install new guard rails install new stair stringers as required and to code. Etc. I don’t break it down by every individual task because simply the customer does not care about that and if you start pricing that way, they’re going to see that you were nickeling and dim every little bit or at least it feels that way. I strongly suggest would be to not go so detailed on your estimate estimates. 2. Breaking down the cost for every little thing is a waste of time and gives you a lot of problems in the future and what I mean by that is that the customer can actually see what you’re charging for every single little thing. We have never done that and I never will for the simple fact this is that this is my price take it or leave it. I would put the total number in at the beginning of the estimate and explain what we’re going to do for every thing. 3. I would not be breaking it down line by line. I would basically say as I did above supply and install the following to home as requested. I have a voice recorder that I use and I use transcripts that create a itemized description for our clients and it is very broad but at the same point in time it is for Phils what they have requested us to do. This is more than adequate the more information you give them the more problems you’re going to get transparency isn’t always transparent, especially when you open yourself to ridicule. Give it a try try doing less regards to descriptions. I don’t think your price is out of line at all. I think that you just labelled it too much and they feel that it’s too much for some of the items. J
Looking for some testers
Hey all. I need 5 people to help me test a new version of TechLine. Those you don’t know TechLine helped you see your numbers in real time and allow you to track time and materials quickly and efficiently. I’ll be posting a video shortly about the new version. If you are in need of assistance for pricing and probability, this is a perfect fit for you What I need is five people that are willing to test it for me so that I can see if there’s any bugs that need to be fixed before it goes live no special requirements are needed. Please message me and. Questions you need. The test will go for 14 days Thanks, muchly Jay

How many of you have those clients, that just want a deal...
Many people love the chase of a deal. But its up to you to cave, or give one. Me personally, hell no... I never discount my price because they just want a deal. How many of you have had people ask straight out for a deal...
