Bonhoeffer‘s Theory of Stupidity: Why do people believe crazy things?
I was wondering why so many people get fooled to believe in all sorts of non-sensical ideas. Why has the woke left become so big? And why do people on the right also follow people who are clear grifters? Why do people on the extremes on both sides become haters of jews? Who do people believe in crazy conspiracy theories? (I deliberately say 'crazy conspiracy theories', humans can and do conspire, and there's nothing wrong in itself to theorize about that, but one can go too far) Why can you keep talking with someone who has nonsensical ideas, but what your saying falls on deaf ears? For example, I have an acquaintance who is on Twitter all the time, and who beliefs the Jews are behind everything. He can't be talked with. Everything in the video below I recognize. He talks in slogans and he talks about famous people who interacted with him, and he tries to impress and shock me when I talk to him, which is fortunately not very often. I tried for years to convince him to stop on his path, to touch grass, rediscover reality, and to make something of his life. But it never had any effect. So yeah, pearls for the swine. Different things could be going on: people could have strong narcissistic tendencies and just enjoy the attention they get, they could be victims of indoctrination and propaganda and stuck in ways of thinking that run very deep, or they could just be lying, trolling and deceiving, they could just enjoy the drama they cause. See the video below, it is short and adds another perspective: that people are not just wrong or bad for believing crazy things, but that they are stupid - and in fact that the force of stupidity is one that has an enormous effect on society. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww47bR86wSc

@Midori Tengu Thanks. I do not see convincing him as a goal though. For that there needs to be some likelihood that at least I have a little positive effect. That likelihood is incredibly small. Some people are just so plain stupid and stubborn that the greatest win is to save your energy. I did send him the video but I know from previous experience that it won't have any effects. He doesn't respond to any logical arguments. And this post was not just about him, it's something I see in more people, it's quite common nowadays for people to become not only stupid but also be very vocal about it. Social media hasn't helped. I think it's good if we realize that this is the case, that we pick our battles. There's plenty of people who are sensitive to evidence, with whom a conversation can be very fruitful, I think it's better to talk with these people, and just don't give the stupid people too much attention. Of course it's always good to also wonder for ourselves if we are stupid or not in some ways, to not only look for the problem in other people. That said, if one is willing and able to be self-reflective, to change their minds about things, to check if their assumptions or some information they encounter has any validity (instead of blindly following hearsay), to admit that one does not know everything, etc then you are already doing pretty well.

@Midori Tengu Indeed! I think one way to be stupid is to only blame other people for everything that is wrong in the world, instead of looking at yourself as well! 😉
Norway moves to jail citizens who trade with West Bank settlements
Some of the Norwegians seem to have lost their minds! @Kåre Jørgensen, your mind works fine, but what is going on over there? 🇳🇴 https://www.israelhayom.com/2026/09/14/norway-law-jail-citizens-judea-samaria-trade/
Free Speech
I have been writing about the "Enemy Within" for over 2 decades. September 11th is a solemn day for the Americans who DIDN'T forget. I don't need a slideshow on who the enemy is on some shock jock by another shock jock. WE (more than just me) asked for simply 2 hours on not giving the enemy any voice. You have every right to speak anything you desire. But I have the right to use my own discernment on who is respectful of others having a day of mourning- and someone who is more interested in their own voice.

@Rebecca Abbott I watched the last part. I understood that this was voiced, and it is unfortunate, but that said the day will come when I am the one who miss some social signals and I hope to not be stoned then, nor do I want that for her. She is a valuable member, and I do think it's good for a community to allow each other to make some mistakes, that is how people learn.

@Rebecca Abbott Sure, I get that, I just want the community to stick together and there to be space to make mistakes. I see that she hasn't been online for two days.
Woke Dutchies protest in the Netherlands with kites for Gaza 🪁
They are protesting in 13 place in the Netherlands using kites (the first screenshot is from Groningen, my city, and actually this place is not far from my house). The kites are an interesting choice, because on one hand it symbolizes innocence, and on the other hand it has been used as a weapon to cause fires in Israel. Now they use it in protests, ignoring the second part, misleading the public. It's crazy and evil. So, I called them out for that. My comment: "In the past, particularly in 2018, kites and balloons were launched from Gaza carrying incendiary materials across the border into Israel. More than 1,500 fires were started in this way, causing extensive damage to nature and agricultural land in Israel." And the first commenter: "Jasper Roest oh yes and you think this is a reason to target totally innocent children. Go away dude. It makes me nauseous." And my reply: "Lianne de Roo You come up with all kinds of accusations that are not based on anything, because I am not saying that I think so at all. I'm just saying that kites and balloons have been used a lot for arson. It would be to your credit if you would take back your accusations." I am curious what you think of this, and I would like to learn some more background about the kites in Israel from the Israeli reading this. Are they forbidden? If so, how do they police this? I understand that in 2018 they were used as a weapon to cause fires, is this still the case? See this post/discussion: https://lnkd.in/p/eu8kfbAu
