📣🧭 Midday — You Pick What’s Next
what do y’all want more of coming up? 👇 Pick ONE (just drop the letter + 1 sentence): A) 🧭 Navigation (simple + real-world) B) 🛶 Canoe camping (loading, trim, routes, landings) C) 🔥 Fire + wet-weather systems D) 🏕️ Camp cooking (easy meals + cleanup) E) 🎒 Pack trim + gear choices (what to carry / what to cut) F) 🧠 Field calls (read the moment, safer decisions) If you’ve got a specific problem, say it plain: “I keep struggling with ____.” Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! 🧭🔥 Welcome to the Crew, Lauren Harrison! 🔥🧭
Everyone help me welcome @Lauren Harrison , joining us from Gypsum, Colorado. Lauren found us through Facebook and is most excited to sharpen her navigation skills — a cornerstone of real outdoor confidence. Navigation isn’t just about maps and compasses; it’s about staying oriented, calm, and making good decisions when conditions change. You’re in the right place to build that. Lauren, I’d recommend starting with Course 1 to lock in the fundamentals, then keep an eye on the Campfire posts where real-world judgment and experience get shared daily. Crew — drop a welcome below and share one navigation lesson you learned the hard way. 🌲🔥 Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! Stay Rugged.

Welcome Lauren ✌🏻
Midday skill check: movement beats strength.
Most people try to power through terrain. Experienced travelers adjust how they move instead. Shorter steps uphill. Slower pace into wind. Frequent micro-pauses instead of long breaks. The goal isn’t speed — it’s efficiency. Movement that costs less energy keeps options open later in the day. Midday is when fatigue starts to hide. That’s why movement discipline matters most here. What adjustment do you make first when travel starts to feel harder than it should? Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! Stay Rugged.

I digest chunks of the trailhead at a time and snack/hydrate in between sections. Trail mix and protein is important along the hike. Never consume more of a hike than is necessary especially in the heat of summer. The rewards of your hike come when you have reached your day goal and get to set up the tent site. That's when the campfire meal and a little bit of spirits come out to relax and prepare mentally for the next day.
🌲🔥 Welcome to the Crew, Helen Sandwick! 🔥🌲
Helen comes to us from Florida and brings a strong focus on camp skills and camp cooking, especially with family in mind — that kind of intention fits this community well. This is a place for steady, practical outdoor skills you can actually use with the people you care about. No hype, no pressure — just learning how to be more capable and comfortable outside. Helen, most folks start with Course 1 to get grounded, then jump into Campfire posts as they pop up. Take it at your own pace. Crew, help me give @Helen Sandwick a warm welcome 👋 Where the Map Ends, The WILD begins!! Stay Rugged.

I always bring a few packs of mountain house dehydrated hiking food with me because they cook up nicely with my jet boil cooking system. These items fold down nicely and pack up using minimal space in my backpack for canoe trips and trail hikes.
