Condensing unit troubles
Hi, we have a situation with our 8 yr old ac unit. It stopped cooling and I called an older hvac technician that we had used on another property. He came out and looked at the condensing unit and said the caps were loose on the high /low lines and as a result we lost most of the freon. We paid $800 for the freon and trip charge. Well about a week and a half later it quit cooling again. (We are in Dallas in the midst of a heat wave) We called him out again and he said the board red light code said the board is bad. He ordered a new board and came out again to install it. Then it had a yellow code I think, and this is where it gets murky, I don't really know what the reason is (I'm not sure he knew either) Anyway apparently the unit is low on freon again and he said there must be a leak somewhere. So Wednesday 7/29 he's supposed to come again and put dye in the line and try to find the leak, but we will have to pay for more freon - potentially another $800 which we don't really have because we've lost our main jobs and are doing side gigs to pay bills. Shouldn't he have checked the lines with the dye the first time to cover all the leak possibilities? to avoid this thing from happening. We think he should refill the freon on his dime from his negligence to check all possibilities the first time instead of assuming just the caps were at fault? We'll be happy to work with him for his time (he charges very reasonably), but freon is horribly expensive. What do you think? We thought about calling out the company that originally installed it because the parts are still under warranty, be he said their labor cost would be 3-4x his labor cost and therefore still more expensive. But there is trust lost from them leaving the caps loose to speed up a freon call back.

What kind of Freon does your system have? I was quoted over 600$ a pound for R22. Ended up getting 2.5 pounds of it online and added 2 pounds of it in my system. Online price was less than $150. First time I had to put anything in my system in the life of it (19 years) and it's cooler now than it was when we moved into the house 10 years ago. Sadly, I had already purchased a new 2 stage furnace/ 2 stage AC (Goodman 3 ton) with all the supplies I could need that are now sitting in my garage awaiting for a week where I have time to do the install. That said, good job doing your own research. If you can learn more, spending that repair money on your own tools would end up saving money. Loose caps is silly, those are there to provide secondary protection to the Schrader valves that keep the refrigerant in the system just like bike tires keep air. The valves could be loose or defective and need changed. Before adding dye, perhaps a 10 dollar bottle of "soap solution" could be sprayed around the valves to detect bubbles. Dye would depend on how much refrigerant is added. If it's losing a lot, the valves would be the first thing to check for leaks.
Help on AC consistently running and takes long time to cool home
I’m looking for some advice on a strange issue with my approximately 30-year-old central HVAC system. When I lower the thermostat by 1–2 degrees, the air conditioner will run continuously for a very long time before it finally reaches the new set temperature. For example, if I change the thermostat from 76°F to 75°F, it may eventually reach 75°F, but the AC keeps running even after the thermostat shows it has reached the set point. I’ve also noticed that the house feels much colder than the thermostat setting while it’s still running. The really confusing part is this: if I then raise the thermostat back up to 76°F, the AC immediately shuts off—even though the thermostat may now show the room temperature is 73°F. That doesn’t seem to make sense to me. Has anyone experienced something similar? What are the most likely things I should check or have inspected? Could this be a thermostat issue, a sensor problem, an airflow issue, or something else? The system is about 30 years old, but it still cools the house. I’m just trying to understand why it seems to overcool and why it won’t shut off until I manually increase the thermostat setting. Any advice or troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How old is the thermostat? It almost sounds like it's an analog mercury switch! I recall my dad having to change our mercury switch thermostat out due to the bimetal spiral getting "old". You can confirm your house temperature with a temperature probe. If you find the thermostat isn't matching what the temperature is in other rooms, consider spending money on a new thermostat. I've seen people report crazy circumstances where their thermostat was being hit by sun due to a change in window blinds. The sunlight caused enough radiant heat to the thermostat to fool it into thinking the house is warmer. Changes to airflow in the house might also cause a thermostat to not get a good average of the home. Congrats on making it to 30 years!
I am in need of help with an ooooold system.
Its 50 years old this year! Only half the evaporator is getting cool/cold Top half is room temp Ive never put in refrigerant in the 28 years Ive lived here. Its R22, and I have some It has no piston, no txv, just a fixed tube/capillary system Soooo... is it just low after all these years? My house is about 82 degrees, out of the vents is about 72 degrees. But, how do you know how much to put in? Ive heard the old "beer can cold" analogy, which tells me nada Dont want to overfill it. Ive done auto ac's since the 1970s, have gauges for R22, just not sure what to do here, cant afford to replace it, and love its simplicity to be honest. I imagine if its a leak its a sloooow small one. Could be a schrader valve, hose, connection etc, or maybe something more serious, but want to try adding for now and see the results. No one can first believe this system is 50 years old, and most start talking about pistons and txv valves, which dont exist, which they also dont understand or believe. All the techs Ive talked to have never seen much less worked on a system this old So how to add and not overfill? I should add Im in Florida, its been in the upper 90s with heat index in the 106 degree feel like, with 80% humidity. So Im sure its struggling, Ive lived around here since 1977 and this is the hottest and most humid Ive ever experienced. Amazingly, typically my ac in the summer spikes my bill into the mid 200s, now its hit mid 300s for the first time. 1600sf house, 3 ton unit On another need, what is the absolute safest cleaner for the evaporator? It needs a cleaning (not that bad, just want to do it) and Ive read some cleaners are caustic. This evap is old so I want something that cleans but is completely safe for it Thanks

@Cliff D If it's a single component refrigerant like R12 or R22 or R32 or r134a, do not put it in upside down. Liquid will hurt the compressor (which only likes to deal with vapor gas).

@Cliff D If it's a mixed refrigerant that has two or more components, you're fine, as long as you did it gently. Multicompment refrigerants have no choice other than to put it in as a liquid, sllllowly! You just don't want to vapor lock your compressor with a liquid. (liquids don't compress)
Can I replace my own hvac system?
Hello everyone, I'm curious what kind of quotes you guys have gotten for a new hvac system? Im in a smaller town in Wyoming and i recently got a quote for 18,000 to replace my gas furnace and air condition with what seems like a pretty basic system. I really cant afford to spend that much. I feel like I can tackle this myself so I just wanted to get some advice. I appreciate this guys channel and it has helped me to keep my system going the past several years, but its looking like its time to replace! Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You definitely can! Or even find an independent HVAC tech and do as much as you can, and call them in for the harder parts. It does take time to learn, but if you like to learn, that turns into saved money and knowledge that it was done right. They say it's more about the installer and techniques used than it is about the hardware or system going in, and I believe it to be true after I had 3 companies give me quotes for $19k to $21k two months ago, and all shared misinformation. One said they could top off my R22 system with another refrigerant to make it last 2 more weeks (it is illegal to mix refrigerants!). Another told me my line set was fine to reuse (R22 vs R32) and when I asked how the oils would interact, the sales tech said oil is oil and I sent him out with a smile (oils are NOT compatible). Another told me they braze the line but don't flow nitrogen because 78% of the air is already nitrogen, and then mocked me for talking about StayBrite to avoid temps that cause cupric oxide. Had to do the quotes to convince my wife how we could save doing as much as we can. I've got most of the parts and tools, but need to get a nitrogen tank (I've signed up at a local air supply, took a few days) and acetylene tank (I'm going to live dangerously and try to air-acetylene my new lineset, but only after practicing on scrap; if I suck at it, I'll jump to StayBrite and flux).

Thanks for building this community. I was bummed when the previous system went down, but totally understood the time commitment that it probably consumed. Hopefully organic growth will give a chance to you to sit back and watch the group grown and help itself, so that you get time back to life, which gets busy the older you get!
