I find the extra stitch very confusing. Do you always purl it with the same color or the one you are knitting with. I just did the first row and didn’t end up with a final three. I excluded it in the slipped stiches. Can someone help? Do i include it in the three?

I am making size 1 and in the process of clue three. I just finished row 4 and was thinking I needed to separate the sleeves but I have not done the last inc on row 8. I do not have the right amount of stiches 22 less. So I have to finish row8? Anyone else have this issue?
