Does protein make you fat?
An interesting question from one of our students! How would you respond? 🤔
Does protein make you fat?

I have heard that eating excess fat will cause your body to "not" prefer stored fat as there is already enough fat in circulation. So, this is my personal anecdote only. I just eat a normal amount of fat. Not high fat, not low fat. 6 to 10 eggs around noon with some cottage cheese. Then a 1 to 1.5 pound ribeye or NY strip steak around 6pm and maybe some more cottage cheese. Then a protein shake around 9pm and maybe a bit more cottage cheese. My daily protein intake sits at around 180g. We have to understand that protein has a high thermogenic effect. Around 20% to 30% of the energy from protein is used just to digest the protein. And fat is only 3% thermogenic. As a result I am much warmer all day and all night. I WAS way under eating protein for a very long time and as a result I could not lose the subcutaneous and visceral fat around my midsection. When I started increasing my protein intake over the past month (keeping all other macros and workout routine the same) I finally saw some weight loss. I lost approximately 5lbs. over the past 30 days. So, no I don't think eating excess protein is spiking your insulin as much as one might think. At least not enough to cause any significant weight gain. And like Anthony Wilson, I am lifting heavy 3 days a week so, the protein that I am consuming is being used for other purposes and not just being used for gluconeogenesis, but this is all just my opinion, because I am not an expert on human metabolism. Dr. Tony Hampton recently did a video on this.
Clinging to Supplements 💊🫨
They cannot let go of their supplements stack even while eating a species appropriate diet, based in red fatty meat. What's your take as a coach, and what does the conversation with the supplement clinging client look like?

I say as one transitions to a more species appropriate diet one should need less supplementation. I would just tell a client to they can keep taking them as long as they're not overdosing on anything (things like copper, iron, iodine, potassium and some fat soluble vitamins come to mind). However, that would only be after I reviewed the supplement stack with them to determine if any of the supplements are in excess.
Top Priority as a Coach
What is your coaching non-negotiable top priority with each and every client? Is the strategy based in food or outside of foods?

Definitely food first, then exercise, then sleep, then other (I believe less important) lifestyle factors like grounding, no screens after hours, etc.
Will Dietary Fat Make You Fat?
Can a high fat Carnivore diet really cause excessive fat gain? Or is this just mainstream nonsense entering the Carnivore community?

@Coach Kristin Fatty ribeye, bacon. Never trimming excess fat from my meat. Cooking everything in beef tallow. Now I use ceramic non-stick cookware and did away with the tallow.

@Coach Kristin I wasn't gaining, but then again I most certainly wasn't losing at all. Personally my weight always fluctuated like the waves on an ocean. I like chuck as well. It has as much, if not more, flavor than ribeye. It's a bit more chewy, but I like chewy. The ribeyes I would get are just the prepackaged ones on the shelf at the GS. (I'm assuming untrimmed ones are fattier?)
Long-term ketosis a stressor?
How would you address this, and what are the physiological mechanics for or against it?

I am fat adapted and have rarely been in ketosis.

@James Dawkins I have not eaten carbs in any significant amount in 4+ years. Basically strict carnivore. I always wondered why I am eating only meat, but cannot for the life of me change the color on a keto pee strip. Thanks to your explanation I now understand why. My daughter tried carnivore some time ago and showed me a picture of her keto strip being dark purple. But she had only been on carnivore for about a month when this happened. This would seem to make sense given your explanation.
