BIG Updates
I’ve been a bit absent, and thus, silent lately. I’ve really, truly…been pondering the best way to serve the couple dozen wonderful humans inside this community. Here’s the conclusion I’ve reached. Ultimately, sometime this year I will be creating and launching my own app where everything is simplified: a place for recipes—a place to connect and ask questions—a place for sourdough bread baking resources—and a place for anything else I find helpful in making your life better. I was going to close this group down and just refund anyone who paid anything. However, I still want to use this to test some stuff out, share recipes in here and communicate with y’all. The first 25 members acted quickly and were able to join for free. The remaining others paid either $10/year or are paying $1/month. I will happily refund you and remove you from the group, but if you choose to stay you will get early access to my app for free. I will need some people to test it out and give me feedback. I’m perfectly okay with whatever you choose to do. Just DM me on here or on social media (or email [email protected]) and I’ll refund you right away. I’m working on some new sourdough content and recipes so stay tuned for those as I’ll be launching them inside here first! Gratitude, Jake Widmann
Homemade Tortillas
Store bought tortillas are functional and that’s about it. They serve a purpose, but they’re simply not good. At least not after you’ve made your own tortillas and then have to compare homemade tortillas the store-bought 25 ingredient garbage. To make your own homemade tortillas all you need is: 2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp salt 2/3 cup warm water 5 tbsp butter Combine all ingredients until a rough dough forms. Dump onto counter and knead until dough becomes smooth. Cover, and let rest for 30 minutes. Divide into 4 pieces for large tortillas or 6-8 for smaller tortillas. I always make a double batch and freeze the extras I don’t need. Press into a rough circle with the palm of your hand. Roll thin, then cook on a pan pre-heated to medium heat for about 60 seconds on each side...until small brown spots start to form on cooking side. Flip and repeat until all tortillas are done. Use immediately or allow to cool then place into a bag and into the fridge for 6-7 days or the freezer for months. Warm before reusing. I don’t know exactly when, nor when our food companies turned into morons and started adding a bunch of nonsense into our foods, but you can start telling them to piss off by swapping homemade store bought junk for good quality homemade foods like these tortillas. Enjoy! Jake

@Becky Bockheim yes, making a bunch at once is so helpful because it is a good bit of work so batching it all is super useful.

@Jessica Short they’re so easy. Definitely recommend doing 2-3x this recipe so you don’t have to make them all the time. Just freeze the extras.
Weekly Meal Plan
Drop a comment if you’d be interested in me sharing our weekly meal plan at the start of every week? It’s not something we really even do right now. I just keep notes in my phone but I’d happily start writing it down and sharing it in here if there’s interest. Let me know! Note: it likely wouldn’t always include the recipe, because many times I’m trying something new out, or don’t have it written down yet, but that’s something I can always work to add or create later as well if it’s popular.

@Sarah Christiansen I fully understand. I ignorantly thought our kids wouldn't start affecting our grocery bill until they were like 8 or so. They've been devouring food as soon as they stopped nursing...LOL! I commend you for desiring to make the transition toward healthier eating/living. I did just post the first weekly meal plan. Check it out under the "Weekly Meal Plan" tab and let me know your thoughts!

@Terri Bodine that’s a great tip. To serve one thing they really like. Good for you for working stint and being persistent too!
My Thoughts On “TREATS”
This is the first time my kids have had a traditional cereal in I don’t know how long…it’s been at least 6 months. They each enjoyed a small bowl, and within five minutes they were all complaining that their tummies hurt and it was too sweet. This is the same type of reaction most kids would have to traditionally healthy foods…”eww, gross, the texture is weird…blah blah blah.” We don’t talk enough about our palate and how it can change…and more importantly…how it can be developed to like healthy foods, just as much as it can be trained to like junk food (like this cereal). YOU are the parent, and you determine, for the most part, what your children put into their mouths. And most importantly…you control what is available to eat in your home. Meaning, they can’t eat cereal if it isn’t present in your home. They can’t eat pop tarts if they aren’t present in your home. They can’t drink soda if it isn’t present in your home! It might not be the easiest thing to rid your home of junk, but it is important and oh so worth it! Much love, Jake

@Jessica Short I get that. The kids new school is actually pretty good with offering fresh fruit and some decent choices. But their old school viewed a “good breakfast” as pancakes, donuts, cereal, and cinnamon rolls for breakfast every morning. Now, let’s wonder why the kids can’t sit still…😂
Drop your sourdough questions ⬇️
Going to be adding some extra sourdough help and content into this group that I don’t do elsewhere. Are there any specific questions or help you need with your starter or baking certain type of breads…certain recipes you’re looking for? Let me know in the comments! 🙌
