How does your garden grow?
May is here (already!) and fur most growing zones, it's officially gardening season! Is anyone growing a garden? I'd love to hear about it! I'm very behind in my garden revamping project and going slowly but surely. My husband and I built raised garden beds...one 8'x8', two 2'x12', three 4'x12', and five 4'x14' beds. We had over 16,000 pounds (yes, you read that right...8 tons!) of soil compost mix delivered to our house and moved it from the front driveway to back of the yard by shovel and wheelbarrow. So many trips back and forth, miles walked, and we still need the 563 cubic feet of garden space is only half full. I built hoop row covers and we got irrigation kits to install. We got 3 varieties of raspberries, 2 blackberries, two blueberries, 2 peach trees, a fig tree, 2 varieties of asparagus, a concord grape vine, and 6 small pomegranate seedlings. More kinds of veggies and herbs than I can list here. It's been a massive project but it's going to pay off! I'm exhausted but excited about our future mini farm.

I have both raised and inground beds surrounded by a fence intending to keep deer out. This winter, I looked like a crazy chicken lady when my girls get in there and make me run back and forth to keep them from getting my collards, lettuce and scratching up onions! I look forward to them coming thru in the fall to clean up the squash, tomato’s and potatoes beds! I am also growing cucumbers for the first time!

@Debbi Jesse that sounds like a great idea! I hope it works for you!! I love having the girls follow me in the garden and get all the creepy crawlies they want!
What they never tell you...
New chicken owners — this one's for you. The #1 thing nobody tells you before you get chickens: They will completely rearrange your priorities (and your day). You'll start getting up before the sun to let your girls out of the coop (even though you have a solar door with a timer set to open and close) and so you can give them black soldier fly larvae treats. You'll learn to speak "fowl" language and recognize each of their voices. You'll Google "is my hen molting or sick" at 11pm and find yourself prowling online chicken forums for answers. You'll be paranoid every time one sneezes, loses feathers, has runny poop, or "just doesn't look like her normal self." You'll make a vet appointment for a bird and feel zero shame about it. And somewhere along the way, you'll realize that going out to the coop isn't a chore — it's the best part of your day. If you're new here and still figuring it all out: what's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you got your first flock? And if you've had chickens for years — what would YOU tell a beginner right now?

3 years in, and I am never too tired to go check on them! It’s also nice that their run is safe from predators (aside from mice and snakes) that they’d rather sleep outside the coop, so I don’t have to lock them up or let them out. Only when it gets really cold out- then I might growl a little on my short walk- Florida Girl here! Newbie advice would be to make friends with local chicken people- they are comfort for the crazy things that happen- because they will. you will laugh and you will cry. And then they will make you laugh again.
Indoor chickens?
Let's open this can of worms... Indoor chicken privileges — where do you stand? Because some of you have a hen with her own spot on the couch and you know exactly who you are. And some of you think that's absolutely where the line gets drawn. No judgment either way. But we want to know — does your flock have indoor access, and how did that even start?

I really want to know the “how” to keep them inside! Can you potty train them? Asking for a friend! LOL

@Debbi Jesse hahaha! Thanks for the visuals! I don’t think I’m ready to change a chicken diaper yet! LOL
Crazy Roo! Help!!!
Hello fellow chicken tenders! I’ve had a few chickens for a few years. Going pretty well. Got some chicks about 9 months ago. 2 were Roos. I sent one back home to where he came from. The 1 left is a great guard chicken, but why does he feel the need to protect my chickens from ME?! Past few days he’s come at me- at treat time- when it’s time to go inside for the evening. Once they are roosted, I can pet him anywhere, calmly, with no fear. But now, at treat time, he goes nuts for the container and me! I picked him up last week and carried him around with no aggression. Now, he looks at me all “cock”eyes! I want to keep him for many reasons, but I can’t have a half-cocked rooster in my yard with kids, dogs and neighbors. Any thoughts?

❄️cold weather❄️
Good Morning, I hope everyone is doing ok, we are finally up to 26 degrees in Alabama and I was wondering how everyone’s chickens are doing with the cold the last several days.

Jack of all trades, master of none. I have chickens and wannabe gardener and crafter. I would make more bread if it didn’t add on the pounds!
