My first ever wild mushroom
My dad introduced me to these well before I ever had an interest in mushrooms. Corpinus comatus or also known as shaggy mane or inky cap. It has a pretty cool feature called autodigestion called deliquescence. Once the mushroom matures, the gills begin producing enzymes that digest the mushroom's own tissue. The gills turn pink → brown → black as the spores mature. The tissue then liquefies into a black, inky fluid containing the spores. The cap essentially digests itself from the bottom upward, releasing the spores into the environment. This is why a mature shaggy mane can seemingly turn from a beautiful white mushroom into a black puddle in just a day or two. Interestingly, this isn't ordinary decay caused primarily by bacteria or other decomposers. The mushroom is actively breaking down its own tissues. And that black "ink" is where the old name inky cap comes from. 🍄

@Christine Fournier Lovely, Thank you. 🥰 I look forward to that. I haven't dared collect the 'wild' ones myself. I just get the dried ones from Chinese shop whenever i find them (not always).
