Thanks for posting this👍. It helped me deepen my understanding a bit more about layers of pulse, and feeling these at different tempos. also how polyrhythms fit into this idea as in you can see them as a more complex variation of layers of pulse. Then you can feel one of the layers in different ways eg a 3 layer over a 4 pulse might be felt as 6 x 8ths over 4 or 9 triplets over 4. With different accents etc. I’m sure I hear Bill Evans do this kind of thing in his solos a lot. He will seem to be feeling a 3 over the 4/4 and will split up the feel of the 3 pattern in different ways. I think 😁. A related observation - One thing I struggle with a bit when listening to jazz solos at faster tempos and trying to work out the phrasing being played - if I’m only counting/ feeling on 1&3 for example, I can lose track a little bit of what is being played on the other pulse notes, especially the off beats. ie if something is being played on the 3+ or 4 or 4+ it can be tricky to recognise if I’m not counting on those at faster tempos.
Practice. Progress. Play.
I've been talking with some of you about staying consistent with practice. Here's the reality: even after 20+ years, I drift without a system. Even with projects and deadlines ahead, I need to sit down and plan. Otherwise momentum dies. Consistency is what transforms random sessions into real progress. And real progress is what lets you actually enjoy playing music. That's the path: Practice. Progress. Play. I'm thinking about putting together a workshop for early January where we build our 2026 rhythm practice plans together. We'd cover: → Daily rhythm workout structure (that you'll actually do) → How to show up consistently without burning out → Building momentum that lasts → Setting goals that motivate instead of overwhelm I'd also share musical examples of what I'm preparing for upcoming projects - how I'm breaking down the rhythm work and building it into daily practice. Couple of hours live with Q&A. Recording + all the planning materials afterward. Under $30. Early January. If this sounds useful, drop a comment below. I'm gauging interest before I put it all together. Dave

Just been trying out this weeks recording (hemiola rhythm), lots of great stuff in there, I liked the doubling the tempo and changing the say etc. Thanks! It will need a bit more practice. One thing was though - on the recording the sound was a bit off. Your voice was loud and clear but it was hard to hear the metronome for large parts and also the claps. The labelling of the replays is really useful helping find previous topics covered. Cheers 👍
Yesterday's session is up!
I've just added the recording and a screenshot of the groove written out inside the description / summary from the transcript. Let me know what was going on for you! Was it helpful? did anything click? was it fun? All feedback welcome :) Head over here to check it out: https://www.skool.com/rhythm-skool/classroom/9d8ff1f0?md=91f7cac8f0ee41159ef895beb591dde9

Enjoyed the session 👍. When the step tempo increased it got a bit more challenging but I managed to hang on☺️. Then when the say changed to 16ths I found myself trying to work out our what was happening between feet hands and voice. But I was able to co-ordinate ok. I found the notes with the replay really useful in terms of understanding what techniques we are learning. Thanks!
