My best LinkedIn growth week so far
If you subscribe to my newsletter, you know that I've been trying to grow on LinkedIn for about a year, but only had a breakthrough recently (a month ago). Well, this last week was my best month on that platform. I got 136 new followers in the last 7 days... highest 7-day growth so far. And with that, I've crossed 1k followers (at 1,091 followers as of writing this). I also got at least 10 new subscribers from LinkedIn last week (that I can tell). One of these new subscribers is someone who works at MemberPress (the membership plugin I use for the Vault). Which is curious because I've considered pitching them for a long-term sponsorship in the past, so... this... might help? All in all, it has been a great week and I feel like I'm going in the right direction re/ LinkedIn. This coming week, I'm planning to do some direct promos to my Vault and 1-1 coaching calls. I doubt I'd get any takers (direct promos don't usually work on social media from what I've seen so far), but I want to test it out anyway. Will update if I do end up getting any new customers or members. In the meantime, you can always get my LinkedIn Starter Kit here if you're curious about that platform.

I thought I was in the business of teaching good marketing...
A LinkedIn post from someone I respect had this to say (summarizing, of course): - If you do not like receiving multi-day welcome sequences, do not send one to your subscribers - If you do not like having to subscribe for a free lead magnet, do not make people subscribe for a lead magnet either In essence, this person was suggesting that those things were not ideal. I respectfully commented, saying: → I've seen some pretty interesting and entertaining multi-day welcome sequences that I've loved, and more importantly, ended up buying something from. Which, as someone running my own business, says a lot. → And, for really amazing lead magnets, if the price is an email address, I'm more than happy to pay. To which they respectfully replied, saying I'm an exception because I operate among a circle of marketers, and that most people do not feel this way. To which my reaction (which I did not voice) was that, if I'm a business owner helping other business owners be better business owners (and marketers, because how else would you sell anything?), same as this person if I might add, then shouldn't we teach them good marketing, and not what we like or don't like? I mean, sure, at the end of the day, we will do what we want to do... that's the entrepreneurial temperament... we like to break rules... but while teaching, should we not teach the rules and leave the exceptions to individual choices? Anyway... thoughts? Those of you who subscribe to me, buy from me, and learn from me... would you rather I tell you feel-good stuff or teach you the rules so you can break them with more clarity and intention behind every decision you make?

Their take is basically "I don't like broccoli, so don't serve it." That's not marketing advice, just their personal preference dressed up as wisdom. Welcome sequences work. Lead magnets work. The data doesn't care about anyone's feelings about them. What doesn't work is doing them badly, which is a completely different conversation.
How do you get people to respond to your emails?
Yesterday, one of my subscribers shared this with me, and I thought this could be the perfect post for the group: ----- I'm thinking about my newsletter and overall voice, and have been thinking about leaning into more of the way I speak instead of the 'button-up version'. My newsletter has a decent open and click-thru rate, but literally zero responses, so I'm thinking about things to try to break that wall between me and the subs. ----- So? How would you get people to want to chat with you and respond to your emails?

People respond to people, not newsletters. End your email with a dead simple question. Something specific like "what's the one thing about X that still confuses you?" The other thing is going first. Share something slightly embarrassing or a mistake you made and watch how many people reply with "oh my god me too." Also directly ask for the reply. Sounds dumb but "hit reply and tell me X" outperforms every clever trick.
