The Secret to Author Momentum: Why Community Matters More Than You Think
Many writers picture success the same way: write a great book, publish it, and readers will somehow find it. It's an appealing vision—but it's incomplete. Books don't create momentum by themselves. People do. A recent conversation reminded me of this truth. An author attended a local reader event with high hopes. She brought her books. She was the only author who showed up. She could have easily called the event a failure. Instead, something unexpected happened. Meaningful conversations led to fresh ideas, stronger relationships, and plans for a better event in the future. That's how momentum really works. It rarely arrives as a sudden breakthrough. More often, it's built one genuine connection at a time. Interaction Changes Everything A book can introduce readers to your work, but interaction creates loyalty. When readers meet an author, ask questions, or experience the story beyond the page, something changes. Trust grows. Your book becomes memorable because you become memorable. That's why workshops, library programs, book clubs, and community events are so valuable. Even small gatherings compress months of waiting into a single afternoon of real conversations. You're no longer hoping someone discovers your book. You're building relationships that last beyond one purchase. Community Beats an Audience During that same event, another group filled the room—laughing, talking, reconnecting with friends. The energy was contagious. That wasn't just an audience. It was a community. Communities return. They recommend books. They bring friends. They support an author's next release because they already feel connected. Career authors understand that every event is an opportunity to strengthen that community. “Career authors understand that every event is an opportunity to strengthen that community.” Don't Measure Success by Attendance One mistake many authors make is judging an event solely by turnout. Instead, ask better questions: - Did I meet someone who could open another door? - Did I create content for social media? - Did I strengthen relationships with readers? - Did I learn how to make the next event better?

Some of my best ideas have come from being part of a community. And writers communities are unique. Often representing many genres... each with the passion to write. Writing an be lonely, community makes it better.

Did you know today, September 17th, is National Pet Bird Day? Have you ever had a pet bird character in your writing or read a book with one in it? Or maybe you had a pet bird.

I had a macaw named Oliver... he constantly repeated himself... repeated himself... repeated himself. We finally found a home for him with an older gentleman who was lonely and hard of hearing. He loved that bird! I am not sure what happened to the man or the bird as we lost track after a few years. Birds are interesting creatures... they can be majestic and messy at the same time. I liked the majestic... the messy, not so much. And I didn't like the idea of keeping them in a cage. For those bird lovers ... happy National Pet Bird Day!
