What's the Biggest Lesson Self-Publishing Has Taught You?
One of the biggest lessons I've learned about self-publishing is that finishing the book is only the beginning. Writing, editing, designing a great cover, choosing the right keywords, marketing, and connecting with readers all play a role in a book's success. I've also learned that progress doesn't have to be perfect. Every book teaches something new, whether it's about formatting, advertising, building an author platform, or understanding what readers are looking for. For those who have been on this journey for a while, what's the most valuable self-publishing lesson you've learned that you wish you'd known before publishing your first book? I'd love to hear your experiences and tips.

KDP conversion “create space” was a task.

@Indy M Congratulations on publishing your book! That's a huge milestone. It sounds like getting everything converted from CreateSpace to KDP took some patience, but it's great to hear you got it across the finish line. I hope the hard work pays off with plenty of readers. How did everything go once the conversion was finally complete?

@Michael Teferi Hi Michael, congratulations on your two poetry books! It's wonderful to see the passion and dedication you've put into your writing journey. Your commitment to sharing your work is truly inspiring, and having your own author website is a great step toward reaching more readers and building your author platform. I believe persistence and continuing to share your voice will help the right audience discover your work. Wishing you continued success as you move forward in your publishing journey. What inspired you to write these poetry books, and which one holds the most special meaning for you?

What genre is your current manuscript? Have you published before or will this be your first?

@Archi Savvy Thank you, that's very encouraging to hear. Self-publishing truly does create wonderful opportunities for writers to share their stories and knowledge with the world. I hope you get the chance to complete your non-fiction books someday, I’m sure your experiences and insights would make a meaningful contribution. I mainly focus on non-fiction and fiction, although I also have an interest in creating other types of books as well. I find the creative process of bringing ideas to life incredibly rewarding. Every project teaches me something new, and it's always inspiring to connect with fellow writers who are on a similar journey. What topics are your non-fiction books centered around?
Finishing a Manuscript Is Only Half the Journey, What Comes Next?
One thing I’ve noticed from working around authors and manuscripts is that many writers spend years focusing on *finishing* their book, but very little time thinking about the *publishing path* that will follow. By the time the manuscript is done, questions start appearing: • Should I query literary agents or consider independent publishing? • Is the manuscript truly ready for submission, or does it still need structural work? • What materials do agents or publishers actually expect? There isn’t a single right path for every book, but clarity about the publishing route can make a big difference in how smoothly the process goes. Out of curiosity for the writers here: Are you currently writing your manuscript, preparing to publish, or already querying agents?

@Charlotte Mark I completely agree with this. Finishing a manuscript is a huge accomplishment, but it’s often just the beginning of an entirely new phase of the journey. Many writers invest months or years into creating their book, only to realize that publishing, positioning, editing, marketing, and distribution require a completely different set of decisions and skills. I think one of the biggest advantages an author can have is understanding their publishing goals early on. Whether someone chooses to pursue traditional publishing, independent publishing, or a hybrid approach, having a clear direction can save a lot of time and help avoid unnecessary setbacks later in the process. It’s also interesting how every author’s path is different. What works perfectly for one book may not be the best route for another, which is why these conversations are so valuable. In your experience, what is the most common challenge authors face after completing their manuscript and moving into the publishing stage?
