Agents In Same Region and Company
I want to get some perspective on this situation, I live in a rural area, so some of the agents I’m connecting with represent the same carrier, like State Farm, and work in different cities but are only about 20 minutes apart. They’re likely to know each other and interact regularly. Do you have any advice for building referral relationships with multiple agents from the same carrier in the same region? Have you seen that create any conflicts or friction, and how would you recommend approaching it?

Savannah, I use a project with background files too. Having that context in one place helps me avoid explaining the whole business again. For your referral notes, I’d want the next action, who owns it and when they said they’d do it right up front. Would you be interested in comparing a blank tracker layout here? No client details needed, just the fields that make it useful.

Hi Savannah, I’m Glen, with a construction background. I haven’t handled that specific carrier-referral situation, so I don’t want to invent advice. What do you most want those relationships to be known for—being responsive, explaining the restoration work clearly, or something else? That seems like a useful place to understand the overlap.

@Mike Lindberg Hi Mike, did you end up trying something from the training in your referral process? Coming from construction, I’m interested in what helps people make a clear introduction and keep track of what happens next.
Book Recommendations
What books have you read recently that made an impact on you?

Daniel, I found your recommendation while catching up with this thread. I haven’t read that one. What idea from it stayed with you after finishing it? I’m interested in the difference between enjoying a book and remembering something useful from it months later.

Justin, I’m catching up with your Atomic Habits recommendation. Was there one habit you changed after reading it, or a small idea that made starting easier? I’m working on finishing a useful piece of work before reopening the whole plan, so the practical side interests me.
Understanding the other person’s process first
I’m learning about referral relationships after years in contracting, and the discussions here keep bringing me back to the other person’s responsibilities. Before asking a partner to change anything, I’d want to understand how their current process works. What question helps you learn that in an early conversation? I’m interested in how you find out what makes a referral easy for them to handle, without assuming they work the same way you do. A general example would be helpful.
What makes a follow-up worth opening?
I’m learning the referral side after spending more than 20 years in contracting. Matt’s point about giving a real conversation enough time has me thinking about what happens after it. I’d like to get better at following up with something tied to what the person actually said, rather than a generic “just checking in.” A useful note should show I listened and make the next step easy to understand. When you follow up with a referral partner, what detail do you make sure to remember? Their preferred process, a question they raised, or something else? I’d appreciate an example of a useful follow-up without anyone’s private information.
