Question/Suggestion for Freelancers
Dear Group: Please excuse my ignorance, but I have a question/suggestion for anyone who does freelance work. As a lead up, I think we can safely say that the online job market is broken. So, as we were talking about in Coffee Hour a couple of weeks ago, it can really help sometimes to be able to reach a warm body: an live human being who actually knows you. So, my question for freelancers is: why not reach out to clients with whom you have already worked successfully and let them know that you would be interested in a more permanent arrangement, even if is only on a part-time schedule? I cannot help but wonder whether it might sometimes be easier to get a position through a warm connection than simply applying to places cold, by which I mean applying with no 'warmth' to the connection, no personal relationship. Thank you in advance. Respectfully, John

At one point in time, technical project labor costs for fulltime employees (FTE) were considered capital expenses and amoratized over a period of time vs. contract staff which were considered operational expenses in the financial period they occurred. This is no longer the case, but at one time it influenced management decisions on hiring contract vs full-time staff.

John has a very good suggestion about reaching out to previous clients to let them know you are interested in / available for an FTE position. Depending on the size of the organization, you should also check to see if there is a staffing or HR webpage with open positions. I'd also suggest staying in touch with colleagues and former co-workers. They are often your best source of job leads.
