Why most habits fail before they even start
A pattern I keep seeing isn’t a lack of motivation or discipline. It’s this moment right before action. You sit down. You know what you should do. And suddenly everything feels heavy, unclear, or optional. That pause is where habits usually die. Not because the goal is wrong, but because the habit is too big for the moment it’s meant to live in. A simple reframe that’s helped me: 🔹 Don’t ask “What habit do I want to build?” Ask “What action could I repeat even on my worst day?” If the habit needs motivation, willpower, or a perfect mood, it’s not engineered yet. A few checks I use before committing to a habit: ◼ Can I do this when tired ◼ Can I do this when busy ◼ Can I do this without thinking ◼ Can I do this even when I don’t feel like it If the answer is no, shrink it again. Momentum doesn’t come from intensity. It comes from friction disappearing. Curious how others here pressure test their habits before locking them in. What’s one habit you made smaller that finally stuck?
Why most habits fail before they even start
Ever sit in front of your computer and freeze because of change and uncertainty in being a founder?
Ever since I cut the chains of being an employee, I've had some tremendously unproductive days where I sit vacuously in front of my MSI laptop and freeze. There are so many potential things I can do to advance my projects, but I am the only one making the decisions for the projects. With limitless options on how to conduct my days sometimes I am still unproductive. I've spoken to other founders about this entrepreneur block... wondering if anyone else has experience with this and what you have done to remedy it?

@Sam McCord This is way more common than people admit. What looks like procrastination is often decision overload, too many possible moves and no clear next one. What helped me was narrowing the day down to one non negotiable outcome, not a task list, just the single thing that would make today a win. Once that is clear, momentum usually follows.
FANATICS OF FOUNDERS RESTRUCTURING TO HABIT ENGINEER!
Please watch this video to understand the changes that are going to be made, and why! 1) Fanatics of Founders will be changing to Habit Engineer. Why? Because, in my efforts to follow Naval Ravikant's idea of "finding work that feels like play" (Episode #191) and Charlie Munger's idea of "finding a simple idea and taking it seriously", I have accepted the fact that I need to become a life coach, and teach the people I am serving how to engineer habits that ACTUALLY stick. This is what I am choosing to focus my life on, and as David has said recently... "if I had to simplify and distill what I've learned from this entire project - nine years, and almost 400 biographies of history's greatest entrepreneurs read to one word, that word...is focus." This is me focusing. 2) The mastery tracks from Founders episodes are GOING to continue! So if you've been enjoying those, don't leave. I organize my life into 5 different categories - Phyiscal, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, and Financial. I will be organizing the mastery tracks in the Classroom category into those 5 sections as well, and start pulling from other sources than just the Founders podcast that I have found to be incredibly beneficial (books, movies, philosophers, influential thinkers, etc) and turning those into mastery tracks as well to help round out the idea of Ed Thorpe's to "optimize for life as a whole" in my own way. 3) Habit Engineer life coaching will be a tier that is available NOW! Contained in Habit Engineering (the life coaching system I developed with a 93% success rate) is the following process: 1. Teach them the overall system; the purposes - to build a character of integrity - To build their discipline muscle - To help them achieve any goal they set their mind to in life. 2. Identify which area of life they want to change the most in right now (physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, financial), and why? - How? ask them “what’s the #1 thing you want to change about yourself right now?”

@Max Baldauf This is a big move, and I respect the clarity behind it. What stands out for me is not the rebrand, but the commitment to focus and repetition, going deep on what actually changes behavior instead of endlessly adding more ideas. Most founders underestimate how powerful one well engineered habit can be when it compounds. Curious to see how the community experiences this shift in practice over the next few months.

@Max Baldauf This is solid work, Max. I really like how this turns a dense topic into something practical and usable, not just information for information’s sake. The way you’ve framed sleep as an operating system, not a biohack, feels especially relevant for founders who keep trying to push performance without protecting recovery. This kind of structure makes it much easier to actually apply, not just nod along. Excited to see how these Physical Mastery tracks evolve. This feels like the right foundation to build on.

Starting on 1/5/2026, I will be starting a one-of-a-kind, cyclical livestream (or streamteaching, as I like to call it) Monday-Friday on the 100 best topics to learn in your life - and not just the "what", because you can get that from ChatGPT, but the "HOW". Why? Because we've decided to more widely apply this concept from Naval Ravikant - “I got over this idea that reading a large number of books or reading a book to completion as a vanity metric. And the reality is, I would rather read the best hundred books over and over again until I absorb them rather than read all the books. So, I don’t read anymore to complete books. I read to satisfy my genuine intellectual curiosity.” We would rather study the best 100 topics over and over again until we absorb them! Growing up in school, they always told you what to do, but never really ever told you how to do it. "Get good grades", "study for your test", "pass the ACT", etc. But no one ever told you how. Why? Because they didn't have a system for sustainable change. They didn't know thsmelves, how to build habits that actually stuck! The purpose of Habit Engineering is to teach not just the most important "what" that we can learn, but the "how" as well! The Triple S Method is the world's most effective habit building method - users of it have a 92% success rate in being consistent with their habits. Each Monday-Friday I will be streamteaching on one of each of the 5 areas of life I organize my own life into - Physical (Mon), Social (Tues), Intellectual (Wed), Spiritual (Thurs), and Financial (Fri). We will be going over 1 of the 20 most important topics to study in each of those categories - see list below for topics to be covered! Follow along this journey for FREE on our Youtube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/@habit_engineer WEEK 1 Mon: Sleep science Tue: Emotional intelligence Wed: Critical thinking Thu: The nature & character of God Fri: Wealth creation

@Max Baldauf This is ambitious in the best way. I really respect the emphasis on the how, not just the what. Most people collect information, very few build systems that actually change behavior. What stands out for me is the repetition over depth approach. Studying the right topics long enough to internalize them is where real leverage lives. Also appreciate how this is structured around life as a whole, not just productivity or money. That balance is rare and needed. Curious, how are you thinking about helping people avoid overload with a scope this wide, and keep momentum week to week?
