Honestly, I think both matter, but if I had to choose, I’d say unforgettable characters have a slight edge. As a beta reader, I can be drawn into a book because the premise sounds amazing, but it’s the characters that usually make me want to keep reading. If I care about what happens to them, understand their struggles, or find myself thinking about them after I put the book down, that’s when I know the story has really connected with me. A brilliant premise can grab my attention, but strong characters give me a reason to stay. At the same time, great characters need a good story to live in, so I think the real magic happens when the premise and characters work together. When I beta read, I pay attention to that connection whether the characters feel real, whether their choices make sense, and whether I genuinely care about what happens to them.
