Pace (Transition)
I'd love to have my team play with more pace in transition, however, we play 2 "bigs" simultaneously, most of the time. One of them is our best scorer so she needs to be on the floor. Also, most teams we play are smaller, quicker, and already play with pace. Because of this, we tend to run out of gas quickly. Any suggestions?

Have you tried speed training? I know @Lee Taft has a lot of great resources for basketball coaches. Speed is a skill that’s very trainable. Also, when you train speed you train endurance. If your players are faster, then they won’t have to work as hard to keep “pace” in the game.
Cutting the Bottom
The latest episode of the hours and the conversation at the end about cutting the bottom 10% was interesting to me. While I agree that cutting that group would make any team more efficient, I would challenge Tyler and Mark on whether that actually aligns with being a transformational coach. It’s true that we can spend too much time on that bottom 10, but I have seen too many of that bottom 10 change their lives and habits to just cut them without truly investing in them even at the cost of my own happiness at times. If success is just winning games then yes cut the bottom 10 and you’ll get better. I just believe that I can win games and build men of character. Also, I know there are strategies to change that bottom 10 without it taking up all your time and effort. A lot more could be said, and I hope I did Mark and Tyler justice. However, I would like to know what everyone else thinks. Am I wrong to think this?

@Frank Fogg I love what you said about cutting, mentoring, and bringing back. One of my former athletes that I’m closest to now, was that kid. I guess where I would differ, is that I would prefer to create such a strong culture that cancerous people don’t want to be apart of it. Nick Saban used to say that lazy people hate being around hard working people because you either have to change your behavior or go away. So I would rather build up that 80% of the culture really strong so that the 10% have to either change as well or they will probably leave if they don’t have great character anyway. At least at that point it’s the choice of the young person on whether or not they will conform to the standard. That seems more transformational to me, but I’m not going say anyone is wrong. Just a great thought experiment. Thanks for your input @Frank Fogg !

@Frank Fogg I’m a sucker for acronyms and OKG’s is a great acronym. I’m going to steal it, but I promise to give you credit! lol
5-Out Triggers
We are moving from 4-out to 5-out. I’ve never taught 5-out Drive and Space. What are other triggers vs a neutral defense in 5-out other than slot to slot triggers? We teach Rose first and have triggers for bounce outs, but I’m curious what else is out there for 5-out. Thanks!

I know we talked the other day about bounce out triggers when you can’t penetrate from Rose series, but I love the thought of posting up guards in the 5 out to invert the offense. Especially when you can’t get an advantage off the bounce. Think Villanova with Jay Wright. We tried to do that off Fan last year but didn’t get into it enough and it ended up being more of a call than a trigger. Guard post ups are great for creating a domino catch or advantage shot around the rim when taught well. That might make the move to 5 out easier for you as well since it will feel a bit like 4 out.

We teach that protection plan too. I just wish we got to barkleys more often. We get like 1-2 a game, and I would rather go to it as a main action. It’s hard in HS though with the closely guarded rule.
March Madness Lessons Learned So Far
Hey Coaches! It's my favorite time of year, and I would love to know what if any lessons you have learned from the first weekend of play in the NCAA Tournament. I have watched more of the women's games thus far, but one thing that is common across all games is that being able to dictate tempo is a deciding factor in close games. Thoughts?

This tournament has reminded me of the power of identity. The top teams have a clear identity of who they are and play to that identity. Houston and Kelvin Sampson are the best example of that. Their commitment to their identity covers up for a lot of faults.
Defensive Awarenesse with SSG
Hey everyone, Vasco from 🇮🇹 here. Lately I've been having some problems with my team's defensive Awareness (more specific weakside defense and Box out defense) We work on it a lot in practice, but it seems that it doesn't translate to the game.. for context is an U15 team. Can someone help me out and give me some tricks, drills, ideas to create something different for them? Thanks a lot!

When I think of awareness I think of anticipation or ability to predict a pattern on defense. I have had great success in building the skill of anticipation by playing disadvantage defense. For example we play 4 offense versus 3 defense. This helps us build an awareness or anticipation of having to rotate to cover up weak spots in the defense. Put your defense at a disadvantage in SSG, and I promise they will get better at weak-side defense in games.
