I was in the studio with an major artist who is thinking of going indie, and we end up talking about how artists lose their purpose trying to be what society thinks in an artist, and she said that alot of artists fail because they strive to imitate what they see on the internet and WANT THAT. She said "Your purpose ainât gonna come from pretending youâre somebody else, it comes from owning where you came from and flipping that sh*t" And that really stuck w me. Alot of creatives see a path and follow what ATTRACTED them to that path, not the things that got them there to EARN where she is. No one wants to to do the HARD PART. Outside of the stuff I'll redact cause it's personal, we talked about how she can go viral after not doing ANY music, and she said that she had to EARN that, and you're a one hit wonder to the industry every QUARTER unless you can break a hit. She said she didnât just post one video and chill. She just kept doing it without expecting ANYTHING; in her words she just, "kept talking my sh*t, kept showing up until [redacted] couldnât ignore me". This is the part that creatives, ESPECIALLY those who grew up in the internet era, get wrong. I think it comes from the fact, that people don't share their missteps more often, and for that reason, it isn't shown to us when they DO, cause the algo thinks we would think it's boring, and the f*cked up part is ITS NOT WRONG. Sorry for the long post, but to every one who is frustrated in not seeing progress, STOP WORRYING ABOUT PROGRESS, or else you're gonna hate yourself. You can track your progress, as long as you know that comparing it to other people's growth isn't just counterproductive, it's pointless.
