Hello everyone
I'm not new to copywriting, but I've started to use Upwork after unsuccessfully outreaching to cold prospects for months. I got a couple projects under my belt (thanks to writing copy for free with hopes anyone would notice πŸ˜‚) so I suppose it'll be easier to land my first gig on Upwork. Right?? Looking forward to meeting you all

Welcome to the Upwork journey! And YES, another copywriter in the house. Love it. Here's something that worked REALLY well for me when I was breaking through: I'd offer a 2 hour money back guaranteed trial. Sounds simple but it's a game changer. You can even use this to get around the whole "can I see samples?" thing. I used to tell clients that writing is super subjective. What's Hemingway to one person is Captain Underpants to the next, you know? πŸ˜‚ So instead of having them try to imagine their brand in someone else's work, the trial lets me SHOW them what writing in THEIR voice looks like. For THEIR specific project. Way more powerful. The awesome news? There is SO MUCH copywriting work on Upwork. Like seriously. The first part is definitely grindy, I won't sugarcoat it. But once you break through and get some momentum, everything gets SO much easier. What kind of copy are you most excited to write?

@Ivan Guedes Oh man, we're basically twins! That's what I do too! I started as a sales copywriter and eventually specialized in working with coaches doing full stack funnel building. πŸ™Œ Okay so first, I LOVE the hustle of reverse engineering the job post and finding the company. That takes serious initiative. But here's the thing about boosting and burning through Connects like that... I personally would NOT recommend boosting or paying Connects for ANYTHING other than applying for jobs. Don't boost your profile. Don't pay to be higher on the list. Don't pay for the available option to show. Here's why: When you're just getting started, you have SO MANY THINGS working against you. Zero jobs. Zero reviews. No JSS. This means that no amount of boosting is going to solve the actual problem you need to solve, which is landed jobs, trust building reviews, and getting as close to a 100% JSS as you can. Instead, use the levers you CAN control to create interest and urgency: your headline, your opening hook, your profile rate (and then add a discount in the proposal too), your proposal opening hook, and that 2 hour trial with a money back guarantee. Definitely recommend the trial so you get PAID if they like the work, but it also gives you an easy out if they don't love it (which serves double duty to protect your JSS!). And here's something that might sound counter intuitive: I would NOT waste your Connects on niche specific jobs right now. You're going to have a really hard time competing in your niche until you get a JSS, some landed jobs, and reviews under your belt. Look for very small scope, super fast turnaround jobs (usually $5 to $25ish) to land your first few fish and get those profile building stats and reviews. THEN start to slowly transition towards your niche. I know it feels like you're going backwards, but trust me, it's the fastest path forward. You've got the right energy and work ethic. You just need to redirect it strategically! πŸ’ͺ

@Kevin Dominic Garcia Welcome! πŸŽ‰ Bookkeeping and accounting is such a solid niche on Upwork. There's SO much demand for it, especially from small business owners who desperately need help but don't want to hire someone full time. The transition from employee to freelancer can feel like a big leap, but honestly once you get your first few clients and reviews under your belt, it gets so much easier. That initial momentum is everything. Also, painting landscapes AND drawing people and pets? That's a cool combo of skills. Have you ever thought about offering custom illustration work on Upwork too, or are you keeping that strictly for fun? Just curious! What's been your biggest challenge so far with getting started on the platform?

Welcome to the group! πŸŽ‰ How long have you been doing children's books? And are you mostly on Upwork or do you have clients from other places too? I'm a copywriter myself (different world from books lol) but I always find it interesting how different writers find their clients. The proposal game on Upwork can be wild sometimes. What age range do you usually write for? Picture books, middle grade, chapter books?

Hey Joel! Welcome! πŸ˜„ Another copywriter! Love to see it. And hey, we ALL started at zero on Upwork. That beginning phase is rough, not gonna lie, but it gets way better once you get some momentum going. What kind of copywriting are you most interested in? Like are you into sales pages, emails, ads, blog content? Just curious what gets you excited. The cool thing about Upwork is there really is SO much copywriting work. The trick is just figuring out how to stand out in those early proposals when you don't have reviews yet. What's been your biggest challenge so far on the platform?

Hey @Hassan Tariq πŸ‘‹ Hope the job hunt is going well! Have you tried Upwork yet? There's a ton of UI/UX and design work on there, and remote is obviously the default. I know it can feel a bit overwhelming at first with the whole proposal writing thing and trying to land your first jobs, but once you get your profile dialed in and figure out what kind of projects you love doing, Upwork can be a solid pipeline of work. What kind of design projects are you most into? Like are you more product design, branding, web stuff?
