✈️ Flight Cancelled or Rebooked Due to Fuel Shortages – What Are Your Rights?
This actually happened to me today with a well-known Irish airline…... Due to the ongoing disruption and fuel issues, my flight was cancelled and I’ve now missed an important conference. I thought a post would be beneficial for the community members.... It’s frustrating in the extreme — but it also raises an important question: 👉 What are your rights when this happens? With ongoing disruption linked to fuel shortages and conflict in the Middle East, many flights are being: – cancelled – delayed – or rebooked at unsociable hours Naturally, the question is: 👉 What am I actually entitled to as a passenger? ⚖️ Your legal rights (UK & EU law) Under air passenger rules (often referred to as UK/EU261), if your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you: ✔️ a full refund, or ✔️ an alternative flight (re-routing) Even if the disruption is outside the airline’s control…you still have rights. Airlines must provide care and assistance, including: – meals and refreshments – accommodation (if needed) – transport between airport and hotel ⚠️ What about compensation? This is where it gets more complex..... If the cancellation is caused by “extraordinary circumstances” (e.g. a war, airspace closures, an outbreak, fuel disruption), airlines may not have to pay compensation However… 👉 You may still be entitled to compensation if the airline could have avoided the disruption or failed to take reasonable steps 💬 Real-world issues affecting people Many people are being rebooked onto flights at: – very early hours – much later dates – or inconvenient routes 👉 You do not have to accept a rebooking that is unsuitable 👉 You can request a refund instead This is a service contract after all and you have consumer rights. 💡 Steps to take if you’re affected 1. Check what the airline is offering (refund vs rebooking) 2. Keep all receipts (food, hotels, transport) 3. Ask for written confirmation of the reason for cancellation 4. Don’t accept “extraordinary circumstances” without question
