Challenge! Show Up & Create
Most artists don’t fail because of talent. They disappear. So let’s fix that. New challenge: Show Up & Create → 3x per week→ for 30 days→ post whatever you made (finished or messy) Rules: - No perfection - No overthinking - Just proof you showed up - Miss a day? Don’t quit. Just continue. This is about becoming someone who creates. Not someone who waits. I’m in too. Who’s joining?

@Sheeba Dhillon great colours. I find oil pastels very difficult - so much blending. What papers have you tried? The paper stick can make a huge difference. I've been experimenting with different ones for my soft pastels and it's incredible how important the surface actually is.

I kept up the pace on Monday, losing my day to painting this piece. The opportunity to work with a palette of cool greys was very satisfying - hard to believe it's June as the murky mist and heavy cloud was more like winter. It was only the flat calm of the sea that hints at a summer lull. I used white pastelmat and marked out a 9x16 ratio on A3 to get a broader composition. I really wanted to capture the bright sparkles on the water, and sacrificed a good amount of a pastel stick to sharpening and knocking the marks onto the paper. Very messy and much vacuuming was also required after that!
Help Each Other by Engaging on Instagram
Hi there! 😊 As an artist with a small Instagram account, I’ve found it really lovely to have a group of supportive and engaging followers. I’ve even noticed that strangers, mostly other artists, sometimes cheer louder than friends and family 🤪 Personally, my goal right now isn’t to grow a huge following (my profile has actually been private for a while), but I do really enjoy meaningful engagement and supporting others as well 😊 That’s why I’d love to invite you to drop your Instagram (name or link) below so we can follow each other, engage, and support one another 😊🙌 Mine is https://www.instagram.com/lizaglorius.art?igsh=MW5qZWk4eG1xNDlxNA%3D%3D&utm_source=qr

🌿 Community Spotlight
I want to take a moment to highlight someone who has been consistently shaping the energy of this space in a really meaningful way. @Jenny Warden has been showing up with presence, generosity, and momentum in this community. She’s one of the people who quietly makes things move forward here — through sharing, engaging, and contributing consistently. She’s been one of the top 1% contributors in terms of activity and support, and I really want to acknowledge that properly. So: thank you Janny ❤️ Your presence genuinely matters here. At the same time, I also want to acknowledge everyone who supports this space financially through Ko-fi. Those contributions help keep this group running, ad-free, and open for everyone. It directly sustains the work and energy that goes into maintaining it. Both types of support matter. Different forms, same impact. Going forward, I’ll be introducing a monthly (or more) a Community Spotlight — a simple way to highlight the people who help shape this space through their energy, ideas, and consistency. More of this soon. @Jenny Warden

That is so kind. Thank you. It's lovely to have this place to connect and share. After years of hiding and being solo with art practice it feels incredible to meet other artists and indulge collectively in celebrating being creative.
Breaking charcoal pencils
Does anyone have a fool proof way of sharpening soft charcoal pencils? I'm about at my wits end 😂

The Derwent pastel and charcoal sharpener is by far the best thing for the job. I've tried loads - manual, electric, cheap, expensive - and the little Derwent is THE BEST. Only thing that doesn't snap the inner "lead" and still sharpens it to a surgical point. They are available via Amazon in the uk at about £4.40 each. Hopefully you can source, and give one a go.

I'm a charcoal and pastel artist from Devon, in the UK. I love to draw and paint with them, despite the mess and risk to my apartment's decor!!
