Where are your spoons going this week?
Real talk for the middle of the week. You have a limited number of spoons in a day. Energy units. And the publishing world will happily eat every one of them with drama, doom-scrolling, and arguments that change nothing. Choose where your spoons go. The author who guards her energy and quietly gets the work done will outlast the one who burns out winning internet fights. Keep your head down. Get stuff done. What is stealing your spoons this week? Name it here. Sometimes saying it out loud is how you take the energy back.

People. I like to write on video calls with fellow authors. Usually, we're good about keeping to timers - sprinting for 25 minutes and then talking for 5. But with the world on fire, we're spending too much time talking. My social battery is dinking down towards 0. I need to get them back on track with timers.
Most sales happen before chapter one
Here's a hard truth I wish someone had grabbed me by the shoulders and told me years ago. Most sales are won or lost before a reader ever reaches Chapter One. Your cover, title, series name, and blurb are doing the selling while you sleep. Quick exercise: open Amazon, pull up the Top 100 in your category, and just look. What colors repeat? What mood? What promise do those covers make in half a second? That pattern is your reader telling you exactly what they want. Drop your genre in the comments plus one thing you notice the top covers all have in common. Let's crowdsource the patterns.

New Adult & College Fantasy - 75% object covers (of the Iron Flame type) with the rest solo figure covers (interesting because this category used to be dominated by whychoose books) - lots of orange (whyyyy), black, blue, a little purple, some hot pink. Still a lot of The X of Y and Z titles with ornate, fantasy fonts, so it's nice to see my fonts are still to market.
Oh, what'd they do now?

@Kendra Johnston May's a weird month on both sides of the pond because of all the holidays. The ads have been converting (all three sets are targeted at a $0.99 first in series and I can see steady unit sales), so I can't complain about that, but I haven't seen a ton of read-through and I don't know if that's because readers are stocking up for the summer or the Zon's reporting is wonky (again) or what. 🤷‍♀️

@Kendra Johnston Me, too! Super-frustrating to not know why something isn't working as well. 😵‍💫
Homework Week 3!
Take an image (new or last week's homework), make 1 ad with it (using Canva) and 2 - 3 variations, (different orientations, different fonts, different typography placement) Plus your feelings and thoughts PER variation. Using today's trainings

@Michelle Girard Just reacting as a reader, those white background ads are scroll-stopping to me. I would definitely give them another look.

@Jill Cooper It would make my day to know that it was a typo, given the number of times I've realized there was a typo on a graphic *after* I've hit "post." 😆
