This was a great couple of days watching Jake work his magic. He's a great mix engineer and getting the chance to watch him work is very inspiring. Will be attending the next one for sure.

just goes to show that the static mix HAS to be the foundation to a great mix and not the "tools" or "toys" you may use later to enhance the final product.

another thing is that being a fly on the wall lets us peek into Jake's workflow and compare to how we are doing things. There's no right or wrong, but to be able to see how somebody else does their work can be eye opening.

for me it's all about the workflow. That being said, you need to work with a reference track and definitely now with a spectrum analyzer while you mix. Since you should be referencing a "mastered track", your finished mix will sound very much mastered. Then the mastering process will only enhance some frequencies here and there and the compression should also be very light.

@Bryan Bailey the same principle applies to mixing. You shouldn't fix bad recordings in the mixing phase. It should all begin with tracking. If you capture good recordings while tracking, your mixing phase should be fairly easy. If you have bad recordings you'll have a tough time mixing and mastering.
