Crossbows & Archery Seasons
This is always the elephant in the room when it comes to archery seasons, and I’m gonna say right away that a lot of you followed me know that I’m not against crossbows per se, but I do not believe they belong in conventional archery seasons for the reasons I’ve listed below. I was asked to write a short treatise for a large organization on my opinion of crossbows why simply because I saw the creation of the laws in Ontario in the 70s for archery only seasons, and I saw those seasons created and allowed in the very beginning simply because of the constraints and the difficulty required, whether with a compound recurve or longbow to hunt effectively for any game you had to get close it wasn’t the weapons inefficiency. It was its range and its distance and the competency required to be effective with them! Read below and fill your comments in. Cheers! Grant In the mid 70s here in Ontario- my father and his associates of the then Ontario Bowhunters association finally convinced the province and the wildlife Enforcement Branch/management branch to look at archery only seasons, and there were some fairly strict parameters apart from the obvious poundage/ equip limitations. The argument that won the day was simply that archery seasons were longer because it was more difficult to hunt with the weapon (and be successful) what they called at the time primitive weapon seasons. This was entirely based on a very specific skill set in having to get close because of the weapons range and effectiveness, it was just more difficult. It was never meant to be the easy way or the sure way. The BowHunter needed to get close - much closer than other weapon systems to be effective. Of course the compound is started surfacing around that time, but of course the compound was a much more basic compound than the compounds-the wheel bows produced today let off speed - sights etc. etc. crossbows were somewhat prevalent but nowhere near as much as they are today.. the problem across the board we have in the hunting community now is that technology rules the day essentially based all around success, and of course, the profit margin of those companies pushing success..

I completely disagree with this, I think it’s great that we allow x-bows during archey season. It helps with 1.Hunter recruitment and lower barrier to entry 2. Would rather have inexperienced shooters take a deer with a x-bow than have deer running around with arrows stuck in them and provide more data to anti-hunters for banning bowhunting like they did in places like Ireland and the UK! ( You can rifle hunt for majority of year in Ireland). Times change , as the western economies continue to struggle people will be forced to spend more time and resources just to maintain a decent living. More people will live in condos without a vehicle and won’t have access to the range on a regular basis. We can adapt to the new times or become extinct by creating more barriers , lower hunter numbers and loosing the privilege(Should be a right!) to hunt. If this was the original intent or not we should make decisions based on our reality today. People who want to take up the challenge will outgrow their xbows and pickup a more challenging weapon organically, ( lots of rifle hunters in the UK travel to bow hunt) . People using gun drives round the season would interfer with the bow hunt so it makes sense to keep separate seasons , otherwise I would love it if they allowed all weapons throughout the season

@Colton Deline , thx my curiosity was mainly around how to setup and position etc as things will happen quick and predators are smarter than prey plus they have binocular vision thus can focus on non moving targets . @Grant Richardson any tips from your vast experience of bowhunting on how to approach this?
Saddle hunting tips for 60 inch recurves
Any saddle hunters here? do you have tips for hunting swamps full of branch coniferous trees?

@Wes McElravy , @Kris Kok , Thanks, I hunted last season with a 1stick , and I like it. I however was a bit confused on how to setup on a coniferous type tree as it’s shaped like a pie with a mobile hang on tree stand you are in the gap between branches, but in a saddle you keep the tree between you and the deer . I was wondering if anyone sets up sideways on these spots to sit in the gap/ angle formed by the branches. I am hunting pressured public land swamps where we have to setup close to the beds and often these difficult to setup spots are where the deer are
Broadheads
What broad head are you shooting and why? Width, length and grain?

i’m shooting 300grn steel force. Here is a pic of the traditional broadheads used by the Bhil archers in India. They are a tribal community and have an archery centric culture. Looking at the size I am assuming it’s a 1000gr+ arrow on 35-50lb bow. The broad head is easily 400gr+ . I have seen them in person taking shots at flying birds They have a unique style of archery where they draw at the chest level similar to a dumbell row.
