ISBN & LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Hey, after reviewing my notes, I realized I miss spoke. Bowker, sells ISBNs through MyIdentifiers.com. The Library of Congress handles cataloging in Publication (CIP) data and maintains the nation’s largest book catalog, but it does not assign ISBNs. So, if you’re publishing a book, you’d go through Bowker to purchase and register your ISBN, not the Library of Congress. So, basically: Bowker is the “retail desk” that sells and issues ISBNs. Library of Congress is the “library brain” that catalogs, classifies, and preserves books (protects your intellectual property)

You’re correct that they’re two separate steps: 1. ISBN – You already did this through Bowker, so your book is official in the publishing world. 2. Library of Congress (LOC) registration – This is optional but recommended if you want your book to be cataloged in their system and made easier for libraries to discover and shelve. For your current book, it’s not too late. You can still apply for a Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) and register your book even after it’s published. The only thing you missed was the chance to get pre-assigned CIP data (which is only done before publication). So: For your next book: Do both before release. Current book: You can still register it with the LOC, it just won’t have CIP data.CIP = Cataloging in Publication. - It’s a program run by the Library of Congress (LOC). - Before a book is published, the LOC prepares a block of cataloging information (like subject categories, Dewey Decimal numbers, and descriptive data) and sends it to the publisher. - That data is printed on the copyright page of the book. - When libraries buy the book later, they don’t have to start from scratch — they can just use the CIP data to catalog and shelve it quickly. Think of CIP as a “head start” for libraries in cataloging your book. Important: You can only apply for CIP before the book is published. If the book is already published, you can still register it with the Library of Congress and get an LCCN, but you won’t get CIP for that title.
