Stroke
I had a stroke, but my work stopped meeting my accommodations. I had to quit. I was originally denied SSDI because I was earning too much money. I have reapplied and am waiting acceptance. I need income in the meantime. I am 62 (63 in Oct). I was married 10 years, he died last year (2025), but wasn't retired or at retirement age. Do I have options and where can I start?

@Cheryl Van Arsdel it is still called survivor benefits! You may be telling them the wrong terminology. Tell them you want to file deceased survivor benefits. Ask for a Title 2 CS! Not the person who answers first. You won’t need anything of his to begin the app except his name, birthdate, place of birth and SSN if you have it. To continue later you will need a certified marriage LICENSE, not the town hall form you filed to get married but the one issued the day of the wedding and a final divorce decree, the one with the judges name and date it became official, to prove the marriage. Just know if the marriage was under 10 yrs even by 1 day it will be denied.
Chapter No response
Everything I learned to maneuver through the social security disability system ,I learned to your site. My biggest issue is chapter will never return any of my phone calls, even if I leave a call back I had trouble with them last year and same thing going on this year . But I do live in Kansas City Missouri

Tony location doesn’t matter. Do you call late at night? Sundays? When the office is closed? Also They get busy especially leading up to OE (Oct thru Dec) I have the name, number and email of a team member I can contact. Next time call and find out their contact info and get in touch that way.
Welcome call from Medicare Provider
@Ed Weir We just signed up for medicare for the first time and selected an advantage plan provider. They have called saying its a welcome call? I am confused becasue I have never gotten a call from a new healthcare provider so I wanted to ask others if this is a thing with medicare? There are so many scams going on these days its hard to trust if this is something real. Thank you

@Stacey A yes it’s normal, also encouraged to save up questions for the call and the home visits are also normal.
Widow benefits vs. my benefits
When I applied for SS I was told I couldn't leave ex spouse (deceased) until full retirement and collect on mine until that time. SSA told me I had to take his as it was the larger amount.

@Loril if you were taking yours early (before FRA) and his was higher (unless you were getting SSI OR SSDI) you could have kept his til FRA and take yours first, if it was financially feasible of course.
Help with my SSA!
Hello everyone! At the time was 62 and unemployed. The agent at the SSA told me to take my retirement since I was not working. Well I did, and they automatically place me on SSI. She didn’t tell me that my checks would be less. If she had told me that I would not have taken it then! Now, I’m 69 and want out of SSI want to receive more pay. So, what should I do? I want to start a side hustle to able to when I want to. Please help!

@Marilyn N. Yes - no penalties since you're over FRA - you have to switch first!!!

@Marilyn N. FRA is the age you have to be to get your full benefits. If you file under 67 you get permanently reduced. At 62 the reduction is 30%; at 63 it’s 25%; 64 it’s 20%; at 65 it’s 13.3% and at 66 it’s 6.7% then at 67 you get the whole benefit. If you wait from 67 to 70 you’d get 8% extra per year
