How to be CREATIVE
"Creativity IS NOT a Talent. It is a way of operating" -John Cleese worth the watch...

Love John Cleese, but I didn’t have popcorn around for the deep dive. Here’s a great summary - love the no mistakes and lifetime of play parts John Cleese's 1991 speech on creativity, delivered to a global audience, delves into the nature of creativity, emphasizing that it's not a talent but a "way of operating" (3:31-3:37). He playfully highlights the inexplicable nature of creativity, likening it to Mozart's music or Van Gogh's paintings (2:00-2:15). Cleese introduces two key "modes" of operation (5:52): • Closed Mode (6:27-7:08): This is the typical work mode, characterized by purposefulness, urgency, impatience, and a slight anxiety. It's a mode where tasks are completed efficiently, but creativity is not possible. • Open Mode (7:08-7:30): This is a relaxed, expansive, and less purposeful mode, where curiosity and playfulness thrive. It's the environment where natural creativity can surface, as demonstrated by the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming (7:47-8:39) and Alfred Hitchcock's approach to problem-solving (8:54-9:28). Cleese stresses the importance of being able to switch between these two modes (10:55-11:00): the open mode for pondering problems and generating solutions, and the closed mode for implementing those solutions decisively (9:34-9:52). He outlines five key factors that facilitate getting into the open mode and fostering creativity: 1. Space (13:20): Creating a quiet, undisturbed environment away from daily pressures (13:31-13:45). 2. Time (14:46): Dedicating a specific, uninterrupted period for creative work, suggesting around an hour and a half (17:11-17:12). This also includes the idea of tolerating discomfort and spending more time pondering a problem to arrive at more original solutions (18:40-20:07). 3. Confidence (21:49): Overcoming the fear of making mistakes, embracing experimentation, and understanding that in the creative process, "nothing is wrong" (22:54-22:59). 4. Humor (23:06): Recognizing humor's role in quickly shifting from the closed to the open mode, promoting relaxation and playfulness (23:10-23:26). He distinguishes between "serious" and "solemn," arguing that serious discussions can still involve humor (23:50-24:19).
