Have you noticed it yet? You water… And two days later the soil feels dry again. Or maybe the opposite… You’re still watering like it’s January… and suddenly things feel soggy. Welcome to early spring transition mode. As daylight increases, your plants shift even if they’re still indoors. And if we don’t shift with them? That’s when overwatering (or underwatering) sneaks in. Let’s break it down. 🌞 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 = 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 = 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐔𝐬𝐞 As days get longer: * Photosynthesis increases * Leaf production speeds up * Roots become more active * Soil dries out faster Even if temperatures haven’t dramatically changed, light alone triggers growth momentum. So if you’re watering on a rigid “every 5 days” schedule… It’s time to switch back to observing instead of scheduling. Plants don’t own calendars. They respond to conditions. 🚩 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝟏️⃣ 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 In January, growth is slower. In March? Things wake up. If you don’t adjust, plants may dry out faster than expected, especially under grow lights. Dry stress right now can: * Stall growth * Cause leaf curl * Slow root development 2️⃣ 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭 Here’s the tricky one. Some gardeners think: “More growth means more water!” But seedlings especially can’t sit in soggy soil while adjusting to stronger light. Increased light speeds evaporation but cool nighttime temps can still keep soil damp below the surface. That’s how root rot sneaks in. 🪴 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 Instead of following a schedule, try this: ✔ Check soil moisture with your finger (1–2 inches deep) ✔ Lift containers - lighter pots need water ✔ Water thoroughly, then allow proper drainage ✔ Avoid constantly “topping off” small amounts daily Deep watering + proper drying cycle = stronger roots. 🌿 𝐀 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 This is a great time of year to use bottom watering if: * Seedlings are well established * You want to encourage deeper root growth * You’re trying to prevent fungus gnats
