Hi! 👋 I’m Dave Ingalz in Mountain View, California (San Francisco Bay Area) USDA Zone 10b, Mediterranean climate. I’ve grown pole beans, bush beans, Sun Gold and Super Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, garlic chives, green onions, cilantro, Italian parsley, long purple eggplants, leaf lettuce, arrugla, mandarin oranges, kumquats, fig, Sugar Perl corn, many varieties of summer/winter squash & Japanese cucumbers, okra, Chinese broccoli, snow peas, snap peas, shelling peas, Charentais and Homeydew melons, artichoke, sunflowers, Boston ferns & Australian tree ferns. My ambition it to become expert in my local climate enough to create a self sufficient and sustaining permaculture food forest for myself someday on the very limited land surrounding the small house. Challenges include pressure from neighborhood squirrels (who love to dig up garden beds and sometimes marauding crops, slugs, snails, spider mites, dryness and heat in summer months, and the clay like soils here which can become caked on the top surface impeding deep water/root penetration, air circulation and is generally nutrient thin. My ultimate ambition is to start an all organic homestead outside of city limits, perhaps in the hills/mountains around Silicon Valley to make a mental health retreat/“glampground” business where events can be hosted like meditation/yoga retreats, weddings, personal growth seminars, corporate getaways, and the like with a fantastic menu of mostly grown on site healthy and nutritious foods for staff and guests. I’d also like to start a greenhouse for sustained cool season food production too.
