Equipment advice when just getting started.
I am just getting started as a side income for now with plans to expand to full time over the next few years. Considering the circumstances I just mentioned, I am looking for advice on what you all think are the best options to help me get started. Current plans are to purchase a 16ft gooseneck roll-off trailer and 4 bins to start with. Some of my questions are what brand trailer and bins, standard vs non-standard rail, bin sizes, number to start with, business name and how much that impacts branding and name recognition, and best ways to market new business. I currently own a neon green 7x14 dump trailer that would also be part of my rental options. Was thinking I want to stick with neon green color for bins for consistency and they stand out and with the right name and logo I think I can create a brand easy to recognize. I know that’s a lot to consider but looking for solid advice from you guys based on your own experiences. Thanks

Hey Chris! Be mindful of CDL laws in your area but I definitely recommend going to a 16’ trailer STANDARD rail system. I started out 14’ MaxxD 60” rails and I just made the switch to standard rail. Cost me some money because of that so don’t recommend going that route.😂 as far as brand I have Keystone Waste Solutions HT16’ trailer. It is their first 16’ one but will be on the market soon for others to order! This thing is a beast and built right. It is a reeving system so it is more expensive than basic winch systems BUT the longevity and safety of having reeving versus winch is a lot less stressful. Not to mention just the quality of the trailer, the customer service is TOP notch with them. @Bram Chappell @Don Clute can help you out with this option. Jumping back to 16’ versus 14’. By adding the extra 2’ I was able to get 25 yard cans. Definitely makes it riskier to going over weight and being illegal but I am keeping it to residential customers. Just picked one up today completely full and it only weighed 1.98 ton. I lost a lot of sales because people wanted 30 yards and my best option was a 20 yard and they never went for that. I’ve had several now ask for 30 and I say 25, then they book with me. Last bit of info is if you are already branding with green, STICK WITH IT! I was told from a knowledgeable business person that a lot of people brand for a year or 2 and think it’s not working so they change stuff and it gets worse because people are trying to relearn your logo and colors. Pick one and stick with it! Good luck brother!

Finding ways to get your name out there is KEY. We live in a new world with social media. Never before have you been able to get your brand in front of so many people for $0 - but sometimes free comes at a cost. When something is free it by definition is also less valuable. Your competitors are probably posting in the same places. Doing mostly the same thing. Remember - while there is a skill and difference between drivers and companies, if your potential customer ONLY sees a picture of a dumpster in the driveway, then there is 0 difference between what you do from the next guy. That is where BRAND comes in to play. Lets imagine 2 separate companies competing for attention in the same market. Company A and B both post a picture of the dumpster they just dropped every day. What sets them apart? Does one have a generic white truck and the other has a highly branded wrapped one? Does one wear uniforms and the other doesn't? Does one have a driver with a huge smile having fun while he works while the other is a heavy set grumpy looking man with ketchup in his beard? The answer is obvious - you can compete on PRICE or you can compete on VALUE. If it's price then you can be the generic truck, non uniformed, heavy set grumpy man with ketchup in his beard and it won't matter. If on the other hand you want to make a PROFIT, then I would highly suggest you focus on the brand differentiator. BRAND is the thing that can 2x, 3x, 4, 5x, your ad spend. BRAND is the thing that changes your phone calls from "How much?" to "When can you be here?" I good brand does the heavy lifting for you. Once it's well established everything becomes a bit easier. So what is BRAND? How does one create a brand? Is it colors on a uniform? Is it stickers on a truck? The word brand comes from the cattle industry. It is the hot iron seared into the skin of cattle to identify which ranch they belong to. I can't speak from everyone, but I am grateful that I don't need a hot iron pressed into my skin to do "branding" for my company in 2025.

I’ll hop on this one to say that spending the extra money on branding your truck and dumpster does wonders. Before I did it I just had a small square magnet and never got phone calls saying, “I saw your truck. What are your prices?” I spent $820 on my truck partial wrap because I like the white truck and then several hundred on my dumpsters(in laws own a printing business so I got vinyl at cost and installed myself.) After I did this I kid you not I was getting calls weekly saying, “I saw your truck! WHEN can you have one delivered.” Or “Hey man I see your trucks everywhere! We will need a dumpster soon and was just calling to get on the schedule!” Low and behold I only have 1 truck but it looks professional and is clean majority of the time which is a huge priority. I also have royal blue dumpsters and people tell me how they love the color and how clean my equipment is. Building my brand on blue and clean. Also placing that shirt order this week to start handing out to every customer!

🛒 Dumpster Manufacturers and Locations
I'm going to compile a list of dumpster manufacturers, where they are across the country, and the best way to get ahold of them. I can't baby sit every experience that anyone ever has with them, so I can't guarantee that everyone I list is perfect, but I will do my best to ensure we make note of who people are loving and who is dropping the ball for the industry. I have met a few of them in person and have purchased or know people who have purchased from a few, so I'll list those first. If you don't see your current builder on the list and think they do a great job, please comment and leave a brief review. If you've used someone who ended up being terrible quality or an actual scam, please leave a comment below and let use know so we can avoid them. --- TRUSTED COMPANIES --- Evolution Welding and Fabrication https://evolutionweldings.com/ 2095 NW 141st St, Opa-locka, FL 33054 (786) 534-3970 MAC Corp https://www.maccorp.com/ 4717 Massachusetts Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46218 (317) 545-3341

Please respond to the poll so I know where to channel the most resources, and if you have an idea for a way to improve the show comment below so I can consider it. I started doing these events so we can build a community within the dumpster space. It was founded by a hauler, for haulers, so as far as I'm concerned WE are the number 1 priority. You tell me what you would benefit from, and i'll do my best to provide it. Thank you everyone!

🎢 How is business in your local area?
I keep hearing that people have been dead, and that's not JUST in the dumpster industry. I've heard it from a very well established tile installer. I heard it from a buddy of mine who repairs sprinkler systems. I just read a post about issues with getting paid at another mans storage lot. How are things looking for you in your local market? Are you experiencing a slow down? Is it business as usual? Slammed as can be? If you're slow; what has been your primary focus for digging yourself out of the hole? If you're slammed; what has been the greatest driver of growth and success? Personally I'm in a weird spot. Year over year I'm crushing it, but if you look at 2025 as a whole, this has been my worst month BY FAR. So it's hard to say what's going on in the world based on my experience. Let's hear from you guys on what you're seeing!

Yeah man it’s pretty slow for me in east Texas as well. This is the 2nd month in a row with less revenue of the month compared to 2024. They are actually the only 2 months this year that have been less than 2024. Im taking this time to take advice from you and try to brand myself better. Changed up my social media content and really trying to make a physical presence in the local public. Thinking about ordering 100 shirts and just start giving them to every customer and potentially offer them for sale and try to get royal blue shirts throughout my community. I know that’s a small deal but it’s been on my mind lately.

@Joseph Maxey honestly I did stop google ads completely because it was around $100/lead😳 but it was dead even doing google ads so I stopped and focused on extra hours of SEO. Getting city specific pages and stuff. Now I’m back into google ads for a few weeks and calls have picked up but not near as busy as last August. It has rained quite a bit over the last month and a half but the last 2 weeks itself it hasn’t rained plus 100° days so weekend warriors aren’t working I’m sure. I think I’m going to try the shirt thing next regardless. Honestly there is a local company doing a flash sale on Richardson 112 for $9.50/each. That’s high but good hats. Minimum 84 order.
