New season/New team anxiety.
Hey sports parents! Have you ever had a situation like this: It's the start of the new season and your little athlete is SCREAMING that they don't want to go, when just last week they couldn't stop talking about how excited they were for the new season. Now they are saying they want to quit! It's so confusing and stressful for everyone involved. What strategies have you tried to get through situations like this? There are a lot of options, some work better than others. Anyone brave enough to share your stories or some advice?

I think this is rather common. I could go deep on the societal impact on kids and short attention spans, but I think a better framework is to simply coach on persistence. My stepson expressed this same emotion when it came to baseball. He quickly discovered that this was not his sport. Although it was a long season, we as parents asked him to honor his commitment and finish the season. He did. He learned a valuable lesson. He found a way to enjoy the season. He also learned that he was responsible for his choice. Not his parents. It helped him mature. He never played baseball again. Instead, he became an all-state football player. I'm not sure he would have if he did not experience disappointment of not letting him quit. He may have quit football when it got tough. Just my thoughts.
