Horror Hypothesis: Dancing Plague of 1518
Hello friends, hopefully you are all doing well today! I wanted to include this new discussion format for us and see if you liked it. The goal here is just to have some fun thinking about real things that have happened or are happening and what the causes could have been. Think old legends and lore, mysteries of the universe etc. I’ve thought about this dancing plague more than a few times over the years. I wonder if it’s more legend than fact, but certainly seems very cosmic horror like as a group of people driven to madness. Have you heard of it? What do you think caused it? Share your knowledge!

Claviceps Purpurea fungus on rye crops, leading to Ergotism. It's well documented, some say the Salem witch trials were triggered by the presence of the fungus in the food.
On a list of top cosmic horror writing… what MUST we add, and why?
For me, it has to be "Fourteen" by Peter Clines. This book starts off very simple: a young man just trying to find his way in the world and get an apartment that has a nice discount. What ends up unfolding, however, is one of my favorite books of all time. Nobody is allowed to go into apartment number 14. Why is that? His curiosity makes for an epic tale. The audiobook is outstanding as well! I've been on a quest to find a book just like this one for quite a long time and never quite found it. The rest of the books in the series are okay but they do get progressively weaker. In my mind, "Fourteen" and "The Fold" make a good duo. Now for our newer members, I'd love to be able to compile a list of all of the top cosmic horror stories and recommend it to people whenever they ask. What do you think should be added to this list and why?

Who are you?
Hey everyone! 👋 This is our official "get to know each other" post for the whole group. Jump into the comments and tell us about yourself! (no pressure of course) - What got you into cosmic horror? - Since everyone here is into the same thing, what content would you recommend we check out and why? Quick note: Feel free to self promo, but don't make it all about selling stuff - we want to get to know YOU as a person, not just your pitch! After you introduce yourself, scroll through and check out what others have shared. Leave some replies and connect with people - that's what this is all about! Can't wait to meet you all properly! 🙂 Cheers, Matt

Hi! Miguel here, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lovecraft fan since the 80s. In 2016 ,I self-published a collection of gastronomical weird tales/recipes called "Cooking With Lovecraft", blending two of my interests. I have a number of stories published here and there, several in collaboration with my friend Mike Slater (of NecroNomNomNom fame). I'm not into horror movies, for I prefer the written word. Some of my cups of tea are Thomas Ligotti, Laird Barron, Matt Cardin, Jon Padgett, Matthew M. Bartlett, Max D. Stanton, T.E.D. Klein, and of course, the classics Lovecraft, Chambers, and Poe. Currently working on a couple of secret projects, which I hope to be able to disclose soon.
Music with Cosmic Horror Themes
Hello everyone! I was just wondering what songs/albums involving cosmic horror y’all enjoy listening to. Pictured is an assortment of records in my collection that either 1) serve as the OST to a CH or CH-adjacent film, 2) feature CH visual aesthetics, or 3) contain lyrics that delve into CH themes. I think another (unpictured) record that fits the bill is Jim Sullivan’s “U.F.O” (1969), which is a folk rock album that frequently references mysterious, disappearing towns and extraterrestrial visitors. “U.F.O.” is made all the stranger by the fact that Sullivan disappeared permanently one night in the New Mexican desert, without leaving behind so much as a trace.
