Welcome to The Scalp Science Lab: Access Granted 🔬
I’ve always loved hair. As a hairdresser and makeup artist, I spent years making people feel beautiful. But over time, I saw something a style or a product couldn’t fix. I saw clients losing their hair. Family members struggling. People I cared about—especially those with textured hair—asking for help. And the industry had nothing to offer but surface-level "band-aids." “Try this oil.” “Avoid heat.” “Maybe it’s stress.” I realised that for textured hair (curly, wavy, coily), advice was based on marketing, not mechanics. It ignored Fibre Physics and Biomechanical Integrity. That’s why I became a Trichology Practitioner. I didn't stop loving hair—I wanted to master the science behind it. Currently, I am deep into Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology because hair health is a systemic story involving your gut, your hormones, and your immune system. The Core Protocol: Assessment Before Action Most people don’t have a hair problem. They have a strategy problem. You’ve been taught to buy routines, but you haven’t been taught how your hair actually functions. Inside The Scalp Science Lab, we move beyond the surface: • Biomechanical Geometry: Understanding curls as structural features, not just categories. • Fiber Physics: How porosity, elasticity, and stiffness dictate your hair’s survival. • The Systemic Link: How your internal health (gut/hormones) speaks through your scalp. • The Clinical Audit: Learning to read biological patterns instead of reacting to today's dryness. 🚀 YOUR FIRST LAB MISSION To begin your assessment, please complete these 3 steps: Step 1: Introduce Your Subject In the comments, tell us: 1. What brought you to the Lab? 2. What is the one thing about your hair or scalp you most want to diagnose? Step 2: Access Your Diagnostic Tool Go to the [Classroom Tab] and download the Scalp pH Calibration Sheet. This is your first step in moving from "product-pushing" to clinical science. Step 3: Review the "Physics vs. Marketing" Briefing Check the pinned post to understand why your current routine might be working against your scalp's natural biology.

I am a lover of all things beauty and I had been a natural hairstylist for 15 years educating women on how to properly care for her hair/ scalp, the medicines that could be effecting her hair, etc. I am forever a student of the craft and want to continue to grow in knowledge. I am looking forward to learning, and connecting Right now my hair is shedding and I do believe that is in part of my high blood pressure meds. Prior to that it was fine. My scalp has changed a bit and the products on the market are CRAP! Lol

@Tanesha Coley Gooooood stuff Tanesha. All very accurate info. Good point on the Vitamin D especially at my age and have experienced menopause. I know I don’t consume enough vitamin D, which will change because having low vitamin D effects other areas of your body! Hormones is another big thing for me because I have had a full hysterectomy and the dr wanted to put me on synthetic estrogen which had my hair on the floor. Chiiiiile I had to let that go and find other holistic sources. I will definitely get that blood work done to ensure everything is at proper levels. That you for the Tea.
🧪 pH TESTING YOUR SHAMPOO (March Mission Guide)
A few of you committed to testing your shampoo's pH this month. But before you do, there's an important nuance you need to understand. **THE pH PARADOX:** Your scalp's natural pH: 4.5-5.5 (acidic) pH-balanced shampoos (4.5-5.5) are GENTLE. They preserve your acid mantle, keep the cuticle flat and don't strip your scalp. But here's what most people don't realize: **Gentle doesn't always = effective at removing buildup.** If you have: • Heavy product buildup (gels, butters, oils) • Scalp grease or sebum accumulation • Residue from hard water or chlorine A pH-balanced shampoo alone won't cut through it. You need a stronger cleanse FIRST. **THE PROTOCOL:** Think of it like this: **Step 1: RESET (Weekly or As Needed)** Use a clarifying/detox shampoo to remove buildup and reset your scalp at less once a month, weekly or as needed. This depends on how often you use products and oils. Yes, these are often more alkaline (pH 6-8). That's okay - temporarily. Their job: Strip away everything (buildup, grease, residue) so you have a clean baseline. **Step 2: MAINTAIN (Rest of the Week)** Switch to a pH-balanced shampoo (4.5-5.5) for regular washing. Their job: Cleanse without disrupting your acid mantle. Use these when: → You haven't used heavy products → Your scalp feels clean (no buildup) → You're maintaining, not resetting **WHY THIS MATTERS:** If you ONLY use pH-balanced shampoos but you have chronic buildup: → You'll feel like your hair is "still dirty" after washing → Products won't absorb properly (sitting on top of buildup) → Scalp issues persist (buildup clogs follicles) If you ONLY use clarifying shampoos: → You strip your acid mantle repeatedly → Scalp overproduces oil to compensate (greasy faster) → Cuticle stays swollen (frizz, breakage) **The solution: Both. Strategically.** **HOW TO TEST YOUR SHAMPOOS:** You'll need pH test strips (Amazon, £5-10). **Step 1:** Dilute shampoo in water (1:10 ratio) **Step 2:** Dip the pH strip

I currently use pH- balanced. I don’t use oil directly to my scalp unless I am doing a treatment, which is about 3 times a year. I don’t really use a bunch of products on my hair. I like to keep is free, flowing and natural
