It's still just me in my land business, but in my previous life I used two mental models: 1 - Performance results discussion (PRD) so direct reports had a very clear idea of the results we are looking for. I learned this model from Dale Carnegie Training. 2 - The autonomy / competence matrix. Basically the better the team is doing the more latitude they get. More frequent interaction/training is needed because goals are not being met, or less training and more recognition/gratitude when goals are being met and exceeded. In both models, communication and trust are the foundation for achieving results.
