First Auction Autopsy
A few months ago, Flame @Simon Campbell mentioned auctions to me but I didn't get it. Two weeks ago, Flame @Honey Syed hit me up cold in the DMs and gave me a smooth pitch about getting tons of engagement on a post, and offered a Loom. Between that and a short call afterward, he really opened my mind to what was possible. Thanks, Honey! I considered hiring him to help, but I've been around the block enough to know the bulk of the learning experience is best done by just jumping in, failing fast, learning, and going again. So I'm sharing a breakdown of my first auction, in hopes the good, bad, and ugly of what I tried (and why) is instructive for others in the community. I coach intermediate-level screenwriters to hit the pro level ASAP. I can generally increase screenplay development speed by 10x and had a client get nominated for an Oscar this year. I've sold 35+ coaching packages from $10K-$20K, 20+ masterminds at $1,500, and I'm running a low-ticket Skool community with about 75 members: Screenwriter Marketing I have 68K followers on X (it was 75K until Musk came along) 11K on LinkedIn 20K on IG for my community. I have almost 2K on my email list with an average of 250 opens. But they've been milked too much recently, so trust is a bit down. I first ran a test campaign with the list ("Crazy idea. Would you bid or watch an auction for my $10K coaching package, with bids starting at $1K?") and only 3 said they'd watch, one of whom said he MIGHT bid. With that tepid response, I first thought I'd call it off. BUT... then figured it was probably worth a shot - if I also reached out to about 30 warmer leads I'd spoken to earlier in the summer, and I lean in to my socials, and most importantly - if I could land at least one promotion partner. And... who knows? One partner signed on. I gave him the option of sending 1, 2, or 3 emails to his list for the 24-hour auction. I wrote the emails for him. He has maybe 1K good fit screenwriters on his list and holds a pretty engaged monthly meetup online for them. That community already knows me, and I've previously had a premium client come from it.

@Honey Syed I did poll them! The response was tepid. Only 3 said they'd watch, and one said he MIGHT bid. So I was originally planning to skip it, but then I figured it would be worth running anyway if I went all out promoting it, and brought in a partner. Which turned out to be true, just less impactful than I hoped. I do think that point that you mentioned privately about creating a HERO PACKAGE would have made a difference. My offer was too basic. Plus, as Travis pointed out, I didn't focus on the vacation.

I reviewed the copy more closely to understand your feedback more clearly, and it seems to me, and I'm confused. The first two lines ARE selling Maui, no? -------------------------------------- *Welcome to the AUCTION* One writer will get the same 1:1 coaching that helped my client get an Oscar nomination. My other clients have signed with managers, attached producers, and landed paid writing assignments. --------------------------------------- -> And then I go into deliverables, but with Maui gems sprinkled in. Over 15 one-on-one sessions, [deliverable] I'll coach you to: --develop a screenplay [deliverable] from your singular Superpower, [Maui] using the system [delibveranle] I've used to write 45+ scripts as a WGA writer [Credibility/Maui-adjacent] --and you'll finish with a proven strategy [Deliverable] to get your work read by the right people (even without an agent). [Maui] Are you saying that wasn't Maui enough? Or suggesting a different Maui? Or no mention of deliverables at all? Really appreciate your time and insights here! The principle totally makes sense to me, and I just want to be sure to apply it better next time. And I'm guessing there are many people in the community who can also learn from this case study distinction too. Thanks, @Travis Sago !

Hey Flames! I'm Brooks. I started out in the late '80s making movies with my friends and showing them on the community access TV station. Went to NYU Film School. Then made and self-released two indie features: a scene from one has been viewed 1.1 million times, but the feature itself... not so many views :-) So I pivoted to writing screenplays in Hollywood, had success there, and taught the craft at UCLA Extension. Then 6 years ago, I opened my coaching practice to train people to become pro storytellers. The constraint for my clients and my own career (40+ screenplays written, Oscar winning producer attached to one) is that movies are so damn expensive, and every new one is a startup business where it's a crapshoot whether you'll get an audience. That's why you see so many sequels and IP-driven content. Social media has changed the game because it gives anybody some kind of access to billions of people, breaking Hollywood's exclusive hold on distribution. And with AI on the verge of creating cinematic level shots, that constraint (expense) is about to disappear too. I see the future of filmmaking like YouTube. Right now, any person or brand can have their own TV studio. Soon, any person or brand will be able to run their own movie studio with Hollywood quality cinema. A big key to that new model is audience building, nurturing, and monetizing. You guys are doing some pretty fascinating things with audience monetization, and I'm here for it. I've also got a massive wave of screenwriters and filmmakers behind me, starting with my own Skool community: https://skool.com/screenwritermarketing Feeling great about learning from Travis and the fellow Flames, and looking forward to giving what I can to help you all thrive. @Travis Sago What happens if you set an auction for let's say 90 minutes, instead of 24 hours - since most of the action in a 24 auction happens in the end anyway?

@Travis Sago I see.
