💸 Money, Shame, and Growth: What Science Is Teaching Us
Many of us have felt that sting of regret when it comes to money — a purchase we wish we hadn’t made, debt we carry, or comparing ourselves to others. Recent research is shining light on how these feelings of shame and regret around money affect our wellbeing… and what we can do about it. Here are a few powerful findings from new studies: 🔹 Debt and Regret: People resolving debt often struggle with regret over past financial decisions. That regret lowers wellbeing — but how we explain the debt matters. If we see it as a “personal flaw,” shame grows. If we see it as part of life’s ups and downs (external factors), we’re more likely to recover emotionally. 🔹 Shame’s Double Edge: Shame can hold us back — making us feel small, isolated, or “less than.” But research also shows it can push some people toward positive action when paired with self-compassion and self-control. It’s not about avoiding shame, but transforming it. 🔹 Financial Stress at Work: Living paycheck to paycheck doesn’t just drain your wallet — it drains your energy. Studies show financial stress directly fuels exhaustion and negative work attitudes. In other words: financial wellbeing is mental wellbeing. 💡 Takeaway for Us: - Notice when money shame creeps in — are you blaming yourself harshly? - Reframe mistakes as lessons: “That decision taught me how I want to handle money differently.” - Practice small steps of self-compassion when shame shows up. - Remember: financial wellbeing isn’t just about dollars, it’s about mental energy, confidence, and freedom. ✨ When we shift how we think about money mistakes, we can grow instead of shrink. 👉 Question for you all: What’s one belief about money you’ve carried that brought shame — and how could you reframe it into a lesson for growth?

One big one for me: "People with money are arrogant". I never wanted to be one of them, but I still want financial security. Inner conflict programmed 😞

I realise that and work on "getting this out of my system ". Breathing into that dark feeling/micro-trigger when it arises helps me replace those feelings with "lighter"/ more positive thoughts. For example when I see people with flashy cars etc. I practice to send them positive energy and wish them well. Deep down I know they are ordinary people with issues like anyone else...

Welcome @Boris Wilhelmus ! Seems like you also help people overcome trauma and money hurdles. I’m curious to your approach and how you help people (what teaching modalities and stuff do you teach them). Do you care to introduce yourself?

Thanks Tim. I'm still working on my exact course but my angle is the specific relationship of men, money and mindset. So we'll be looking at expectations of society, the (somewhat flawed) definition of success that society imposes on males, father - son relationships and more. I'm on the journey to heal my own deep-seated money trauma and want to share my learnings along the way. All the while trying to make "spirituality" and the vocabulary around it accessible to a wider audience. I feel that many people - especially males - still have resistance to ideas associated with spirituality and that this has to do with a lack of real life relatable examples and the right language.

Hi Tim, I'm very early in the journey so no website or socials yet. This is very unlike me - in the past I would have had everything ready before jumping in...but this is a new me I suppose. I'm writing down all my learnings as I go into a wild collection of content and will soon put this info a proper framework and then course outline further down the track. Just networking at the moment and getting inspiration...
