Leslie I agree with your premise - the manager has inordinate impact on employee retention - when it is a good organization. If the organization is toxic, even a great manager is fighting a losing battle. I used the concepts in Patrick Lencioni's books back when I was leading large teams. Learning from both practicioners and academics is important to fine tune or build your management skills.

I live and work in north central Greensboro. We got mostly ice, but fortunately limited frozen rain, so not as many trees down as other storms. Surprised at how few of the main streets have been cleared, but that is changing today.
