I play in our church's orchestra. But we have sheet music - no need to improvise. :-)

I used to volunteer playing at Fort Benning's Martin Army Community Hospital in the atrium. I liked to play upstairs behind a large post near the Chaplain's office and Chapel. No one could see me, but everyone across three levels could hear me. I would watch as they'd walk around looking for me. Some eventually found me and came to thank me for playing. One guy said he was so moved by the music he went to the Chapel and prayed. One lady gave me a Miraculous Medal, the Chaplain gave me one of his coins, and the hospital gave me one of their coins. I still have all of them. The Chaplain also got me involved with the Behavioral Health unit. There, I played a lot of familiar tunes, Disney, and the like. Many would sing along, but one guy was so moved with memories he cried. They wrote about my service in their local newspaper. I still have the article. The Chaplains who were there at that time kept me involved in prayer breakfasts, Christmas tree lightings, Christmas Eve service, even their formal Christmas party! They all made me feel like the music made such a difference, lifted their spirits, and were so grateful. After that team left, there've been several other teams. I introduced myself and let them know about my service in the hospital. After the third team told me I wasn't needed, I stopped serving there. But the time I was serving under Chaplain Paul was magical. :)

I started playing the flute back in 1988. I played through middle school and high school, then picked it back up in 2011. It brings me so much joy!
