First review and 200 items!
Just got my first positive review (much more of a milestone to my mind than the first sale [which I was fortunate enough to achieve through a facebook connection who loves my store]) and hit the 200 active listings mark in the same day! Looking forward to gaining traction through these milestones (plus, I've switched off Etsy Ads [keeping them off unless they re-jig their algorithms to work again] and started Meta Ads - something to look into in case it works for you).

@Damion Elson many thanks indeed! That’s right, I literally created a new facebook page for the purpose of running ads and they do drive traffic; the only caveat is, there’s no end-to-end tracking between systems, so working out if an ad resulted directly in a sale is tricky.
4 months in…what I’ve learned
So it’s around about the 4 month mark since setting up my shop. He’s how it’s been going: Started in April. I have now made 96 sales and now sell between 1-5 posters a day. I have made a total of £1696 in revenue. I have around 200 posters listed and I run Etsy ads at $3 a day (for a select few listings). I am however considering increasing my ad budget but slightly scared I’ll have a drop in sales. Any advice on that front would be helpful, I’m half tempted to leave the ad budget as it is because it seems to be working pretty well so far. I earned my star seller badge exactly 3 months after my first sale, after having my account put into a payment reserve (profit prison). I have a review rate of about 9%, with 5 stars across the board. I will say it did take a little while to really pick up but I have roughly doubled my sales and revenue each month since I started. In the past 18 days since the beginning of August, I have made £700 in revenue, I reckon I’m on track to reach around £1,000 in revenue this month. Some things I’ve learned along the way - 1. You do get out what you put in. I am planning on adding more posters to my shop. My success has largely been due to one of my poster designs hitting it off. 2. 2. Make variations of the posters that sell. I have made about 20 variations of my most popular poster. The niche that I am in makes it quite easy to pump out almost infinite variations of the same poster. I’d say about 90% of my sales come from some variation of my most popular poster. 3. 3.i personally started taking commissions to do personalisations on certain posters. This does obviously require a certain skill level in art although this is mainly done through AI with my own personal touches added manually. This is also obviously more time consuming and isn’t suitable for everyone, but it generates a bit of extra income for me and is quite a popular choice, plus I can afford the time and effort it takes me. I would say to anyone starting out that it’s definitely possible to earn some decent money from doing this and I am very grateful that I stumbled across toms TikTok account and decided to take the plunge to learn how to get started. It came at a pretty good time in my life where I had to take a step back from my regular job (as a nurse) because I was burnt out. Art used to be my main hobby growing up but I fell out of love with it. It’s nice to get back in it and I can genuinely say I really enjoy my little poster business.

Extremely well done! Great to know that customised posters with the help of AI is paying off after this time point. I'm 2 months in and have 2 custom listings, but no interest in them (yet). However, like you, I can use a mix of AI and traditional means to knock out custom ideas quite quickly and look forward to finding out if there's an appetite for that. Also, I've been using Gemini Nano Banana, on account sheer volume available for free (I cut the star in Photoshop), but might use ChatGPT Images 2 (kind-of Sora) for some one-off nuanced designs in the future - it's definitely a strong platform!

Stupid question, Gemini has generated this at 768 x 1376. I assume that's their standard resolution? Is this any good? What poster size could this go up to? Thanks

This is a great Gemini result and not a stupid question at all! This is the standard resolution and, when resampling in Photoshop (recommended) or Photopea (good and in fact unbeatable for free, but worse than Photoshop), you can get up to A2 at about 200 dpi, which is good for viewing a poster from a comfortable distance. You'd look at going up to about 3307 pixels wide for that. Gemini Pro, paid-for professional solution, lets you output at about 1728x2464 and that lets you upscale to about A1 at 200dpi (4677 pixels wide) using the preserve details (enlargement) option, using the "Sharpen" filter option afterwards as long as it doesn't make the edges look jagged. And yes, as others have mentioned, don't forget to remove the watermark if it's visible against a mid- or darker colour.

Also, don't forget to go "borderless" unless you intentionally want to avoid the U.S. paper sizes, that don't scale nicely like other paper sizes. :)

@Damion Elson thanks! Most of them are even more atypical and from a subculture, such as the wolf I sold. (I won't celebrate until my first positive feedback).

@Damion Elson so far one bought, lots of interest, but it's only my first month and unfortunately no reviews yet. I've researched to discover what in the subculture does sell, and it's images such as these - I've taken Matt's advice on selling what interests you personally, so you can put weight and conviction behind the store. For instance, I created 2 download-only items based on something popular that I'm NOT interested in, flowers, and I struggled to do them justice with SEO and interest is minimal, so I stopped. However, I've created some art deco pieces based on places I've travelled to, and of the 5 items sold, unsurprisingly, those have sold 3.
ETSY ADS Quiery?
I am in a slight quandary as to what to do with etsy ads - feel im just unnecessarily spending money? Whats everyone elses opinion on it? Different startegies etc?

I've run Etsy ads for just under 1 month and have 3 sales; all organic. I've heard a lot of complaints that this month (early April '26, it changes so much week-on-week), the algorithms are shot and aren't targeting products effectively. Even as recently as Jan 26, Tom appears to be singing its praises, but I sincerely advise researching multiple places before jumping in. I wish I had.
